Yep. That's the high-end of the price range for a lot of replacement projector bulbs. This is something I know. |

| Yup they are expensive. I taught at a high school for 2 years and it blew out once, just before an open class too! Luckily we were able to get a spare quickly, but yeah I remember it being 500 000. That's why I always shut it off if I'm not using it, other teachers don't! |

Best to make sure you shut it down properly. If you just pull the power on it, it cools down incorrectly (too fast I think) and this can shorten their lives.

YES. Forgodsakes, ALWAYS shut a projector down AS INSTRUCTED (i.e., properly, i.e, where you hear fan blowing on overdrive like an SOB) or you'll cook the lamp housing and anything near it.
I can see how schools that use projectors day in & day out could really chew up a few bulbs. I only use projectors for work presentations (a few hours/month) and home-theatre. In those environments, they'll last years & years. I typically end up replacing projectors before the bulb burns out, but I know that replacement bulbs aren't cheap should I ever need one. |

After doing some research on the projector it appears to be a bulb that retails for about 450.
Anyways, I always turn it off correctly. This projector has been in use for a solid 2 years and this is the first bulb to be burnt out. Funding for middle schools seems to be really low so we'll be lucky if we get a replacement bulb. |

JG, would you say that bulbs last approximately what the manufacturers claim they will? I'm curious, my bulb is rated for 3,000 hours in economy mode, and I'm probably around 500 hours right now, so I'm wondering how long I can reasonably expect it to last. I'm hoping at least 2000, is that realistic? |

I would say "yes, generally, with major exceptions". But here's the deal -- those lamp-life ratings that projector manufacturers quote are just estimates, they're not guarantees. It's not like buying tyres where the manufacturer extends warranty for X thousand km/miles. A projector manufacturer will typically extend a one-year warranty on the proj itself (excluding the lamp) and then maybe 90 days or a bit longer on the lamp. So you're never going to put more than a couple hundred hours (and probably less) on the projector before the lamp is out of warranty, after which you're on your own.
And it's that period -- from three months to one year after purchase -- that's the real test whether you've got a dud bulb or not. There are too many proj owners out there reporting dead lamps before or right around the 500-hour mark. These complaints (which have become class-action lawsuits in at least one case) tend to centre around specific models and not specific manufacturers (although Panasonic seems to have a lot of problems, but that could be just a reflection of so many Panny owners out there).
And that's where you are right now, the 500-hour mark. I remember when you got your proj, Thunndarr, about a year and a half ago, wasn't it? I think you're probably safe if it's still working at this point, and you're likely to see the full rated lamp-life or close to it. Projectors now clock usage hours, but they usen't to, and I've had few older LCD proj lamps that lasted way beyond whatever their stated life might have been. There was this Sharp proj that was 3rd-hand when I got it 7 years ago, and the lamp is STILL working today for the 5th owner without replacing the bulb. It's like a disposable lighter I once had that worked for weeks even though you could see there was no more gas inside it. Magical. |

Well, hopefully it will keep purring along. If I can get 1000 hours out of it I'll be happy, because in that case I'll more than likely be upgrading to a new projector rather than replacing the lamp.
And for anyone who read this far and doesn't own a projector. Buy one. Some of the best money I have ever spent. Of course, I may be biased. |

So glad you said this. What are the advantages? I know you get a huge picture, but doesn't the room have to be pretty dark? I am not sure what to get visually, so any + and - you can give would be great to an ignorant1. |

Pro: Projectors themselves are quite small, and therefore portable.
Pro: Huge screen (80-120 inches is very common)
Pro: Great bang for buck compared to LCD or Plasma tvs. (You can get a screen with 4 times the area for around the same price or less.) Even though projectors are more expensive in Korea than in the U.S. they still represent, to me, great value.
Pro: You can have that "at the theater" experience in your home whenever you want.
Pro: Great picture quality. Probably not quite as bright as an LCD or plasma screen, but still very good. And the size pretty much makes up for any shortcomings the picture may have.
Con: Limited setup options. Each projector has a recommended placement and you will have to find a projector that works well in your theater space.
Con: You do generally need a dark room. For movies, very dark. For sports or things with bright colors you could probably get away with drawing the curtains and turning out the lights. Personally, I bought some light-proof curtains so I can make my living room as dark as night anytime.
Con: As seen from this thread, bulbs are expensive.
Con: They aren't great for casual tv viewing, since you've got to turn out the lights and worry about bulb usage. I solved this by having an extra tv for that function. I don't need CNN on a 100 inch screen.
Con: They don't have tuners, so you will need to find something to feed it a signal. I have mine connected to my PC via DVI cable. I find that a PC makes an excllent home theater device. (Currently, I do not have my projector connected to my TV at all.)
Anyway, here're a few pics I took.

Great pix, great reply, Thunndarr. Maybe we could get a Mod to make a Projector sticky for us and anyone interested or curious about them.
A few comments about extending your lamp-life...
-- Run your proj on econo-mode setting whenever you can (a no-brainer, but it's the biggie)
-- Feeding a voltage-regulated, surge-suppressed, noise-filtered, "clean" current from the power source to your system will not only improve many A/V aspects, but also increase lamp-life (gee Guru, how the fack am I supposed to do all that??)
-- Minimise the number of on/off cycles you put your projector through. Don't want to watch two movies in a row? Wanna take a 30-minute break to eat, drink, or bang some honey? Leave the proj on, don't power down & back up again.
-- Always power down properly. Always. ALWAYS!
-- Clean air and a cool room help. Yes, they do. |

If you don't mind...
How much was your projector and how heavy is it? (are you going to ship it home or carry it around with you?) Also, does it hook up to a laptop easily? Cheers! |
