Hello,

I've been teaching in Bangkok for the last two and a half years. I'm American, and I have an Associate's Degree from a state University in the US and a CELTA.

I would like to relocate to Korea, as the salary is much higher and I'm ready to see a new country and culture.

Is an Associate's Degree, CELTA and 2+ years of experience enough to teach legally in Korea?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

No sorry. In Korea you need a 4 year degree and you also have to get them 2 sealed copies of transcripts from your university as well. (sucks I know)

Since you have an associates, why not transfer to a 4 year school and get your bachelor's degree? Take some time, and finish it. That'll help you with employment in Korea and the US.

Thanks for the replies. This doesn't look promising.

TheBrain,
I've been thinking looking at finishing my BA from here in Thailand. I basically have two options:

One, I can attend a university and Thailand and receive a BA from a Thai university.

Or two, I can complete some sort of distance learning program.

Which do you think is better for teaching in Korea? A degree from a Thai university, or a distance learning degree from an accredited US/UK university?

Thanks again.

I believe the Korean immigration will only accept degrees from the English speaking countries.

So would a distance learning degree be accepted? From somewhere like Open University/RDI/Unisa etc...?

If you can produce an original degree (or notorized) and properly sealed transcript, you should be ok.

I have an Open University degree, and it is fine.
Your local regional OU office will be able to send you out sealed transcripts.

DON'T do the Thai option

Waste of time.

If you have spent any time in Thailand you know that as well.

That's reassuring. But is it legal?

Not in Korea - legally.

Immigration REQUIRES a bachelors degree from one of the 7 approved countries as well as the applicant hold a passport from one of the approved 7 countries to get a work visa as a teacher.

The ministry of education REQUIRES that all teachers (of any nationality - Korean, F-status, foreigner) hold a bachelors degree before they are legally allowed to teach anything.

If anyone is telling you otherwise they are lying to you or lied to their employers or are working illegally (and subject to fraud or other charges if they are caught).

What are the 7 approved countries? I'm assuming US, England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand but the others? South Africa? Ireland?
