I have been searching the net to get insight into the history of teaching English as a second language outside of English speaking countries and have not found anything yet.

Do any of you have such knowledge and/or links to it?

I am looking for history of South Korean English teaching as well as for the rest of the world.

I am thinking Korea has been into it since the 1950's when the US Army showed up. I am thinking that the Brits taught ESL centuries ago on this side of the world when they colonized places like Hong Kong and Australia. I found no information on such history. Kinda interesting.

I once read when the English colonized India, many Irish Engllish teachers were used to teach English to Indians. As a result, Indians picked up the Irish accent.

I dont if that is true but it is interesting.

Good luck with your research.

I believe one of Andre Lankov's columns in the Herald covered a history of language teaching in Korea. Check the archives.

Found it. Used it for a presentation.

A History of English Language Teaching, 2nd Ed.
A.P.R. Howatt with H.G. Widdowson
Oxford University Press 2004
ISBN 0-19-4421856

If you don't mind its academic style, it's an enlightening look at how English began being taught outside of England in centuries past.
