You have all read on the Job Discussion Forum - and at the time of writing there are currently 38 pages of posts on the St Andrews Hakwon thread. There are three pages of posts on "Honest article about hagwon crimes against teachers."
You obviously feel strongly about these issues, and so you should. So please help the editors and reporters who try to bring these issues to a wider, mainstream audience.
Your "letters to the editor" commenting on published articles help keep these issues on the printed page and in the wider, mainstream, public eye.
And when the print media publish an article that you feel is offensive to your community, let them know about that too.
You have it in your hands, or rather at your fingertips, to either reinforce negative perceptions of the ESL/EFL community, or to make a contribution to positive change.
More Korean decision and policy makers, more foreign diplomatic missions and companies read the English language mainstream media (and its frequent translations into Korean) than read posts on this, or similar forums.
You figure it out. |

Advice: hire a copy editor who can actually spot grammatical errors. It helps. Every time I pick up an English language newspaper in Korea, there's at least one article with such horrifically butchered grammar that it makes it hard to take the papers seriously. |

Yup, the only articles in the KH I read are the ones pasted in from foreign newspapers, and I only read the KH at all because my boss has a daily subscription to it.
This is just more goading and canvassing from the KH to try and sell more copies of their crappy newspaper. |

Over the last two years, if I pick up a paper I make sure it's NOT The Korean Herald. Although the Times isn't that much better, the Herald has dug themselves a whole in terms of their bias reporting on matters related to foreigners. A few months of puff stories don't make up for that. |

I can't be bothered to read the herald. Actually I don't read any newspapers.
I only read it when someone links to an article here. |

Um, am I reading somethign different?
From the OP I get that he/she would like more reasonable contributions to the paper.
(I'm not going to go into what I think of the paper itself, but standing alone, what is so unreasonable about his request?) |

I am going to agree. Let's not slam the newspaper that is trying to help us, this is really a good thing. How often does this happen? Whatever our opinions about the past or biases, etc. it is not very often that a Korean newspaper correspondent lends his ears and offers his hand to assist our concerns/grievances. Let's try to look ahead at this great opportunity before us. |

Here's how I see it:
The fact that people who feel passionate about these issues and have something to say do so on a message board means that your newspaper has failed them.
Maybe they don't read your newspaper. Maybe they don't like your newspaper.
Maybe they like to interact with others on this board.
Maybe they want to know that their words will be read, rather than hoping they will be.
But rather than blaming them for using the wrong medium, maybe you should take a good look at why they are using the medium they are. |

I like your critical perspective, but your post does contain a false dilemma (as does the OP). Copy and paste functions are ubiquitous.
The OP's main point seems to be that a letter to a widely read newspaper would be a more effective way to encourage or change than posting something that community outsiders aren't as likely to see.
I doubt his motives for posting this (it seems the KH is trying to drum up EFL readership lately) it's still a salient point.
Sure, we all hate the KH, but try to stay on topic ya. |

This thread is a poorly disguised 'Help, I need more writers to submit articles for my column that they let me run in the Herald'. Pitches like this should be in B/S/T forum. |
