(MONTPELIER, Vt.) Vermont senators voted Friday to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, saying their actions have raised "serious questions of constitutionality."
...The resolution says Bush and Cheney's actions in the U.S. and abroad, including in Iraq, "raise serious questions of constitutionality, statutory legality, and abuse of the public trust."
"I think it's going to have a tremendous political effect, a tremendous political effect on public discourse about what to do about this president," said James Leas, a vocal advocate of withdrawing troops from Iraq and impeaching Bush and Cheney.
Vermont lawmakers earlier voted to demand an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq in another non-binding resolution.
...More than three dozen towns voted in favor of similar non-binding impeachment resolutions at their annual town meetings in March. State lawmakers in Wisconsin and Washington have pushed for similar resolutions. |

Let's see...Wisconsin, Washington and I believe New Mexico state legislatures have voted for impeachment. Now we add Vermont.
While gratifying in its way, it is entirely pointless. States don't have any role to play in the impeachment process. |

Why do people keep repeating this BS line? It has been repeated ad nauseum. It is false. State legislatures can pass resolutions calling for Congress to take up the issue. Congress is bound to do so. This isn't fantasy, it's reality.
Now, how far it goes in the US House is another issue. But to say it is irrelevant for states to pass resolutions is incorrect. |

God Bless Vermont...
The first town that called for the impeachment of Bush was in Vermont. |

If they can pressure both houses of the Vermont legislature to act, a resolution can get into congress.
Kucinich is considering filing against Cheney. |

More from the report on Vermont's call for impeachment:
"Welch and U.S. Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said Friday they appreciate and "share the frustration and anger of Vermont legislators and many Vermonters with the Bush administration."
But the delegation said congressional investigations into the Iraq war, no-bid contracts, the firing of U.S. attorneys and other issues were ongoing.
"Before we talk about impeachment, it is imperative that these investigations be allowed to run their course and we should then follow wherever the facts lead," the delegation said in a joint statement."
>>>
In other words, 'No, we are not going to introduce a bill of impeachment in Congress."
As I understand it, a state can ask members of their Congressional delegation to submit a bill of impeachment, but it cannot force them to do so. Therefore, I don't consider states as having a role in impeachment. However, I could be wrong. I'm not an expert on the details of impeachment. |

This is like saying a citizen who accuses a criminal has played no role in the prosecution and conviction, don't you think? |

No, not at all.
I see it as more akin to the mob outside the jailhouse shouting for a lynching. As long as the sheriff and his deputies stand firm, nothing will happen. |

Your argument is: it's not likely to result in conviction, so ignore the law? |
