Howdy,

The quote below is from Dave's guidelines. I am finishing up a paper on subcultures, using Dave's as part of my research, and I was wondering what exactly is 'flaming' and 'trolling.? Can someone please reply with a definition of both? You can PM me with the definition if you like. I don't want to start a riot. Ha!

Thanks ahead of time,

K-in-C

2. If the thread is flamebait, it will be locked or deleted. Individual flamebait may be deleted or edited. Certain users who continue to post flamebait or engage in other questionable practices (such as trolling) may result in more serious sanctions.

Edited to add the quote. I'm a little sleepy. Confused

Flaming mean to barbeque in Korea, particularly over the hot coals that are brought to the table. Trolling is when you go to a fish/squid truck and have a raw meal ordered.

Flamming is just un necessary insulting, as far as I know.

Trolling is posting a topic that is designed to start fights and piss people off. So if I posted a topic called 'English teachers - teachers, or imperialistic bigots' on this board, that would be trolling....i think.

Ok, here's a question to the mods - as long as the operator of this forum decides to employ a real-language filter to force users to talk like 5-year olds, howbout posting a complete list of the words?

We already know how offensive the word "co_ktail" can be, right?

And before you kids get all huffy and worked up, I know that it's not the mods but the administrator of a site that determines what, if any, filter is used. Wink

troll v.,n. 1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See also YHBT. 2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll." 3. [Berkeley] Computer lab monitor. A popular campus job for CS students. Duties include helping newbies and ensuring that lab policies are followed. Probably so-called because it involves lurking in dark cavelike corners.
Some people claim that the troll (sense 1) is properly a narrower category than flame bait, that a troll is categorized by containing some assertion that is wrong but not overtly controversial. See also Troll-O-Meter.

The use of `troll' in either sense is a live metaphor that readily produces elaborations and combining forms. For example, one not infrequently sees the warning "Do not feed the troll" as part of a followup to troll postings.

----------------

flame bait n. [common] A posting intended to trigger a flame war, or one that invites flames in reply. See also troll.

From
the Jargon Dictionary.

Deliberate trolls are one thing. However there seems to be a few people on this forum who enjoy taking offence and fighting over/ misconstruing the most innocent and well meant of posts...must be a lot of bored, paranoid people out there to read into things what isn't there..
I mean, I'm always coming up against this. I don't always have the time or energy to correctly word a perfectly politically correct post...get over it!!!!
