I'm just wondering about the people on Dave's who have experience in making a school newspaper or magazine.
Usually what kind of contents do you have in it for a middle school?

When I have done a newspaper with middle school students, they weren't all that advanced and I was doing it on a very short turnaround time. First I had them choose which department they wanted to work in (sports, weather, lifestyle, people, or arts) and then complete a 5 Ws workshop. We later worked on writing a lead and attention-getters.

I dit not write the pieces, but a few may have been heavily edited when I typed them. I didn't think it was very hard to do, but the kids told their Korean teachers that it was the hardest thing they'd done. I didn't expect or force each kid to produce an article for each issue. I'd take what they give me, and hope to use the finished product to inspire the rest to contribute next time around.

is your newspaper a monthly ordeal?

The one I did most recently was daily , but thankfully a short-term thing. In the past I've done them monthly or occassionally, but it was of my own initiative.

Crazy, but that's how things go.

I hope you're not helping with the book review-writing.

I did a daily newspaper ONLY during a two-week winter camp program. Couldn't keep that up for long!
