And people here call the Koreans "sick" for eating dogmeat...?

Animal rights activists say the kangaroo meat industry is putting kangaroos under threat by killing a large percentage of females and leaving joeys to fend for themselves.
Animal Liberation says a two-year investigation of the kangaroo meat industry has uncovered a range of unsafe and unsustainable practices.
Spokesman Mark Pearson says a delegation will now take the findings to Europe and Russia to raise awareness of what they claim is the decimation of the kangaroo population.
Mr Pearson says 70 per cent of kangaroos killed are female.
"Once you start killing females and getting over 40 to 50 per cent, you are having a devastating impact on the gene pool and the sustainability of that species," he said.
And Mr Pearson says he hopes the report will help persuade key overseas markets not to buy kangaroo meat.
"They do not want to be part of supporting a ruthless industry and a barbaric industry such as this," he said... |

and for the rest of the article....

But the executive officer of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia (KIAA), John Kelly, has questioned the group's data.
"Where these people are getting their data from - small sets which are manufactured to give the results which they wish," he said.
Mr Kelly says all kangaroo harvesters are bound by a strict code of practice.
"Every year the national parks authority in each state conducts an aerial survey of the kangaroo population to get an estimate of the population," he said.
"Now this means that kangaroos are in fact one of the few animals in the world whose populations are monitored annually - we don't even do that for humans." |
There is certainly room for more regulation of what is a bit of a cowboy industry. However, all kangaroos that are allowed to be shot for meat are not in any danger of extinction. There are many species of kangaroo, some are in danger, others have had their numbers increased by the drilling and release of large quantities of water from the artesian basin that is under much of Australia.
There are also very good environmental reasons that Australians should be eating more kangaroo than hoofed animals. There are no native hoofed animals in Australia, and the native plant life is not built to withstand being stood on by hoofed animals. Nor are the native plants able to survive the grab and pull grazing style used by sheep. It does much better with the nip style used by kangaroos.
Further, kangaroos can not only survive but thrive in lower rainfall areas than sheep.
Kangaroo meat is very lean, has low cholesterol level, and is very tasty.

Why so defensive, Mnhnhyouh? Are you an overly-patrioticm barbaric Kangaroo meat-eater...? Do you think Australian culture is above criticism...?
I did post a link to the entire article, you know. We try to conserve space here. |

Exactly! It isn't like you are a troll spamming the board with flamebait and attacking people who do reply. You are just trying to educate and be impartial. |

I am not very patriotic, though there is a little left over. I posted the rest as you had cut it off just as the other sides argument was put. Given your position, it seems that this was a deliberate choice, though I might be mistaken here.
I think that sheep and cattle grazing in Australia is very destructive, and that it would be better if there were none, and Australia's meat needs were met by eating kangaroo. This is not a new position for me.
There is much in the position of animal liberationists that I support, however, there is also many positions taken by those in that diverse group that has little or no scientific basis. This seems to be one of them.
The two species that make up, I believe, most of the meat trade, are the Red and Grey Kangaroos. It would take a sustained effort for a considerable time to be able to reduce their populations to a point where their genetic diversity was being adversely affected.
