I know that there's a post about Weight Loss on the forum. But this is a bit different.
How many of you who have been in Korea for a while now, have lost weight whilst being there?
When I arrived in Korea I weighed 64kg's (sorry I don't work in lb's) and when I returned home a year later I weighed 53kg's!! So a total loss of 11kg's
I wasn't on a diet or anything of the sorts. I drank cola, ate chips, pasta, chocolate, and other foods not associated with losing weight, yet the kilos just dropped off.
I loved it:) LOL
Anyone else experience the same thing? Could it be that their foods are not packed with as many additives, preservatives?
I'm looking forward to returning...need to shift some weight again |

I actually gained about 5kg's. Down to about 2 kg's over what I was now. Funny thing is, I generally live a pretty healthy lifestyle. |

I lost weight my first year due to all the walking I did - sightseeing, up and down escalators/stairs at the subway etc.
After that I gained a crapload of weight before finally losing most of it last year over a six month period. |

In general even when not "dieting", you eat less saturated fat and net calories in Korea. Most Korean food is dominated by vegetables and rice. A Korean meal has on average less calories then a trip to McDonalds or Pizza Hut.
For those that gain weight, the culprit is probably excessive drinking. Drinking is per calorie horrible for the body because not only is alcohol empty calories that are easily converted to fat but when added to a sugar base such as soda and juice it's pretty much liquid fat. On top of that alcohol inhibits the body's ability to function efficiently and it affects the mechanism that breaks down and utilizes fat in the body. |

LOL! If it helps any, I actually drank MORE in Korea than at home. Constantly drinking beer (of all things) I refused to pay the ridiculous amounts for a cheap G&T.
Thing is I hardly ate Korean food during my time there, I went to the Tesco's and bought all the Western type foods I could get my hands on, so it wasn't the Korean diet. I think it's got more to do with what's in their food in general??? |

In my old photos from my first year in Korea my cheek bones were almost poking through my skin I was so thin Combination of living out in the boonies, being cheap/lazy with food, not liking Korean junk food and a fun bought of ear infection/laryngitis/sinusitis/ear infection again with some flus mixed in there kept me daaaaaaaaaaamn thin.
But living with females makes me fat |

Well,
I didn't mean to depress anyone. *lol*
And also in Korea because we don't have cars here we do a lot more walking and moving which is NEPA, non-exercise physical activity, which burns a few hundred extra calories which netted over a week is a pretty decent amount of "free calories burned". |

Not sure how many KeGs I've lost, but I've gained A LOT of muscle from working out and eating right.
Being in better shape isn't about weight loss- it's about being in better overall shape and replacing ft with muscle. If you do that, you gain weight- by the scale- but you're a better person for it. |

I wonder how many of us FEEL fatter because we're surrounded by anorexic koreans, but actually we're actually slimmer than when we first arrived.

Yeah, perhaps. Back home in Canada I never cared so much about my weight. But here, I feel very fat compared to all the Koreans, making me much more conscious about what I eat. I for sure eat less sugar and fat than I did back home because of this. |

Yea, it's definitely weird. I've been in Korea nearly 2 years. Koreans are always telling me I'm too fat and I need to lose weight. I went back to Canada for a vacation about 4 months ago and all my friends and family kept telling me how great I looked. Believe me, they were being sincere. It's all about perception. Most people are thin here and, for the most part, most people are somewhat overweight in North America. |

It does happen. Koreans are SUPER thin, not SLIM, but THIN, so it's bound to happen. That's why you need to let your clothes tell you if you're in better shape. BTW- ANY progress is great, no matter how big or small. |
