TOKYO Police stormed an apartment in the Tokyo suburb of Machida early Saturday and apprehended an armed man who had locked himself in alone for about 15 hours after firing nine shots from a window.

Armed police officers fired tear-gas and burst into his apartment shortly after 3 a.m. They immediately apprehended him, with his face smeared with blood, police said, adding he had shot himself in the head.

The gunman identified as Yuji Takeshita, 36, a member of a gang affiliated with the Kyokuto-kai underworld syndicate was rushed to hospital in nearby Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is in critical condition, a hospital official said.

Takeshita, a resident of the apartment, had taken no hostages and there were no reports of injuries other than to the gunman himself.

The charge for his arrest was a violation of the law controlling the possession of arms by the Metropolitan Police Department. He had two handguns, police said.

Takeshita is alleged to have shot dead Madoka Yokoyama, 37, a member of the same gangster group, at around 11:30 a.m. Friday in front of a convenience store in nearby Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, before he took refuge at his apartment about 700 meters away and started the standoff around noon.

He shot nine rounds out a window in the first roughly 40 minutes after locking himself in and one of them hit a police car, but no one was hurt.

Kanagawa prefectural police obtained an arrest warrant for Takeshita early Saturday over the alleged shooting death of Yokoyama.

They said they are investigating the case as part of a gang war...
