NAGASAKI The arrested gunman who fatally shot Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito on Tuesday is suspected to have had accomplices and prepared a getaway vehicle, police sources said Thursday. A man believed to be an accomplice was witnessed near the shooting site, and a suspicious vehicle was also seen there, the sources said.
The sources said a dark colored passenger car came to a sudden stop at a bus stop, which was only 10 meters from the shooting site in front of JR Nagasaki Station at almost the same time as gangster Tetsuya Shiroo shot the mayor at 7:52 p.m.
Shiroo, 59, allegedly tried to rush to the vehicle after the incident, but ended up being immediately subdued by citizens and officials of Ito's election campaign office at the scene and then handed over to police.
The driver of the car was a young man around 20 years old with his hair dyed brown. He left the car as a police vehicle approached and disappeared into the crowd, the sources said.
At around 7:45 p.m., people including a bus driver witnessed two men who appeared to be gang members at a smoking area of the bus terminal, the sources said, adding the two men also disappeared right after the shooting.
Shiroo was an acting leader of the Suishin-kai gangster group affiliated with Japan's biggest organized crime syndicate, the Yamaguchi-gumi. The Suishin-kai announced after the incident that it would dissolve itself, police said.
Shiroo told police he intended to murder Ito, citing trouble he was having with the city government. |
