One minute its people bashing Americans. The next its Canadians. Invariably Koreans perenially take a bashing on this board.
The Stevemcgarrett thread encompasses the ill feeling on here but ive seen it elsewhere as well. |

| There's not really all the hatred you see here. It's just people having fun on the internet. 99% of the people who post here are nice people. Korea isn't full of rabid foreigners walking around foaming at the mouth and spewing hate. |

I've been wondering the same thing myself lately. I think maybe it's just the stress of living in a place where things are different combined with the ability to be anonymous online. There's a lot of posturing online because people can get away with it. Most of these people probably wouldn't say half of this sh*t in real life.
But for every jerk on this board, there are five posters with something genuinely helpful and interesting to say. Have fun with the cool people, ignore the idiots. |

Well that is a pretty warped sense of fun if you ask me as it seems to descend into anarchy and personal insults pretty easily.
But i take your last point totally though. When i was there met with much more good than bad for sure. I feel Daves isnt really reflective of things in Korea, generally speaking. Maybe its the VTech incident that has brought it out in people.

I think part of it is that there are a lot of young people with limited experience of being in other cultures that are posting here.
Being anonymous means they can take our all of their angst on these boards.

OP, I used to make posts just like yours. Looking at Dave's used to make me really angry-all I could see was the negativity. But like oneofthesarahs said, it's only a small portion that are super-negative.
I do think it is unfortunate that this is what 1st-timers look at when they are thinking about coming here. They get negative feelings about the place before they even get here. Theres a lot of good info and good people, but a lot of ridiculous a-holes too. And when you come here (assuming you aren't here yet from your loc.), you will get the chance to meet some of those losers.
And after a long time of looking at this board, you get to know who the jerks are, who the nice people are, whose posts to read, and whose to skip. It's fun! |

Yeah, just let the idiots slip by unnoticed - do your best not to respond to them even when you really want to. They're usually just after attention in one form or another. |

| I can't help but read the trolls' posts. I think a lot of us are guilty of doing that, as the threads of troll OP's get a lot of hits. The trick in my opinion is not to respond to them or let them bait you. When angered by a troll, one only has to remember that these people are choosing a pretty pathetic form of entertainment, and are probably fairly pathetic sociopaths. |

Yeah. I suspect there are some dedicated, emotionally retarded trolls out there who've been kicked off the board and like to stir things up for a little revenge. Some people get off on winding other people up.
Korea attracts a lot of damaged goods and the internet attracts a lot of damaged goods. That makes for a hell of a Venn diagram.
Do what I've done. Develope a strong selective reading filter and make like old whatshisface. McNamara. Don't respond to the question asked. Respond to the question you wish they asked. |

Has Mcgarret been kicked off? We had it out. But I didn't see him as angry, I saw him as opinionated.
Get your facts straight.
That is the problem with most people on this board. They take a cursory look at a post, and spout some crap out.
You are supposed to be educators. |

Gee, that sounded almost hateful.
My own theory is that there is a fair degree of social frustration and boredom (AKA loneliness) due to language barriers, which causes people to turn to the Internet in order to have a social "life." But, the Internet is very conducive to dehumanizing interactions, since 1) you don't see the person, 2) you will probably never see the person, 3) you interact with people you normally wouldn't associate with. Ever read a letter-to-the-editor that appalled you and stood for everything you oppose? A discussion board can be like that, with the ability to tell the author exactly what you think....
For example, I just don't make friends with self-righteous Christians. By self-righteous I mean into proselytizing and regarding themselves as spiritually superior to atheists. But here, I encounter such people semi-regularly (partly because I am interested in philosophy and look at those threads). Sometimes I say what I think of their ideas and so it goes. The same is true of people who blame their choice to come to Korea on Korea....
Basically, hate is provocative. |

You can't even discuss the topic without becoming the topic.
Get a clue.

It is , but sometimes you have to meet something head on to stop it.
The stereotyping that I see everyday here is not immediately threatening, but it leads to bigger problems.
Why , should we , who have had some sensitivity training, stand back and think this society is normal?

| Please ignore the trolls. I think the original poster's question has been answered. Now let's move on. |
