This was released quite some time ago but release date is just around the corner.
It is the Asustek (Asus) XG Station, an add-on to your notebook for graphics and audio. Words on the street says that it would even support DirectX 10 graphics.
The station can accomodate a double slot graphic card (8800GTS anyone?), 5.1 audio channels, an overclocking dial, volume control and an LCD display.
Interface is via an express card slot (PCMCIA I presumed) which has a bandwidth of 2.5GB/s, just as fast as AGP 8x. Compared to an Intel 945, performance is suppose to increase 9-10 folds.
Sounds great? Watch the price, I'm betting it'll be around 600,000 won or more.
And another thing though....
It looks as big as the notebook itself |

I guess you can install a regular desktop video card into the ASUS thingy and plug it into your notebook computer. |

Exactly. As stated :

I was thinking how viable this could be for notebooks with lousy graphic cards. As we all know, they aren't the best for gaming but the fact that something like this could enable any notebook to play some of the latest and greatest games brings new hope. |

If it's 600,000, it might be better to buy a desktop. |

My thoughts too.
As well as that, a gamer would probably buy a laptop with a decent card already in there. You can get Nvidia 7XXX series cards in laptops nowadays.
But, if someone really got into games and was stuck with a crappy laptop, then, yeah. That Asus thing would be cool. |

But that would destroy it's portability, man! What about the lifestyle?!

Thats where innovative thinkers like us come in and market a carrying/back pack specifically made that that thing so that gamers can stay mobile. |

With the video card (probably a 7900GTS) is that considered a good deal? |

If it came with a video card, and you could upgrade the video card then I would say its a good deal. Most laptops are limited in gaming due to graphics cards anyways.
What is the alternative? Buying a whole new gaming laptop. Probably gonna cost well over $1000. |

I wouldn't say no since there can be many bottlenecks impeding smooth gameplay on a laptop. Some of these could be RAM, motherboard, and hard drive.
If a laptop is not a 'gaming laptop' there's not a whole lot you can do to squeeze more performance out of it. You're better off buying a console or a small form factor desktop depending on what your needs are. |

Thanks, I haven't a clue how much video cards cost these days as I stopped buying them when the $400 Geforce2 first came out.
Anyway, I like the idea. Plug it to any notebook/SFF computers with an express card slot and bang you have a gaming system. |

That huge wedge of a thing is no more portable than a desktop ATX tower. |
