For a one day to one-week tourist, what would you local expats recommend as great ways to taste Seoul and Korean life?

Unusual dining, entertainment, sights? What has seemed most interesting to you? More than just 63 Building and Kyungbok Palace?

You can go out to Namhansanseong, which is just South-East of Seoul in between Seongnam and Gwangju.

If you want to understand some of the things that happened during the Japanese occupation of Korea, visit Seodaemun Prison. I warn you it's depressing, but informative.

I do a couple of unusual things when someone visits me in Seoul.

First, I get them good and drunk. Next, the first option, is to take them to hooker or homo hill for a prearranged sexcapade. Since they don't know the girl, or guy, is a prostitute, they get all excited about the women, or men, being all over them. "I've never gotten this kind of reception before!!" If all goes well, they'll end up with a free souvenir for back home. The other option is to walk them into a random Korean's house or apartment and tell my buddy I know the family. Usually, the Koreans freak out and yell, but my friends can never understand them. I make up translations like "your friend is handsome" and "do you want some kimchi?" as I tear into the family's soju supply. Even when the cops come, they don't do anything except ask us to leave. Eventually we do, but not after a good meal.

I hope this helps and gives you some ideas.

Thanks, that's really helpful.

Depends where the tourists are from. I'd take my friends out for dog soup... but let them know afterwards. I'd go for live octopus also. Take them to a traditional market. On weekends Insadong is a nice place. There's the folk village in Suwon and the small one near Namsan Tower (now, it's Seoul Tower, I think). There is also a kind of folk village museum in Jamsil in the same building as Lotte Department Store and Lotte World and you can go to traditional Korean restaurants there.

Inwangsan is kind of cool, and doesn't seem overly visited. Maybe partly because you have to wind your way through a construction site to reach it.

Sorae has a great fish market that is rarely visited by foreigners.

Ganghwa has some interesting remains as well. Probably best seen with a car though.

That is about as uncool of a thing that you could do.

No, that museum is on Jeju. The one near Seouland is the turd museum.
