Hi there.
I'm weighing up my options for a brief Chuseok holiday, and one of the places I'd like to see is Tokyo. I've heard that Japan in general is very expensive in comparison to Korea, so I have a few queries for those who have lived or vacationed there.
I have an overall Chuseok budget of about 1.2 million won. Now, airline tickets from Incheon to Tokyo seem to average out at about 600,000. So, that leaves me with 600,000w spending money. So, I'm thinking maybe I'll just stay in Tokyo (cut down on travel costs inside Japan) and only spend two or three days there.
So on average I'll have about 200,000w to spend each day in total (including accomodation and meals). Does this sound do-able?
Perhaps I should choose a more economical holiday destination? |

Not the most central location, and you get what you pay for, but highly recomended if you are on a budget. Nice people, too. That would leave you tons of money to spend each day, which is the way I personally prefer to do it.
Tokyo ain't all that expensive, depending on what you do of course. It's not like a candy bar costs 8,000 won or anything like that. Most everything is about the same price as in the US, or Europe or whatever. You can do everything for a reasonable price. Avoid cabs- stay out till 5 or 6am when the trains start again if you're drinking and take the subway.
Then again, on your budget, you could stay at a nicer place, and take a 60,000 won cab ride at some point (which will take you from shibuya to the other side of town, a long ride which costs what it would cost back home), and still be fine.
200,000 a day is more than enough. Go for it! |

Tokyo isn't that expensive compared to Seoul. It isn't hard to get a decent meal for 10,000-15,000 won. The subway isn't that expensive, still much cheaper than Toronto. We stayed at a business hotel right in Shinjuku for 100,000 won a night. Like goodgood said, it really isn't any more expensive than any really big city at home. |
