I was told that if you are a Canadian or American, and you pay taxes out of your paycheck for taxes/pension that if you DECLINE to the refund tat when you are of eligible age, you can collect government aid money. I'm not sure about the age. I think maybe 55.

I think you have to be employed for longer than a year. Has anyone else heard such a thing?

If its true, then the Korean Government can keep the 3% they take out of my paycheck if it means I'll be collecting money from them when I retire.

My understanding and to be honest I am not really sure but I think you need to pay into the national pension scheme for 10 years and the private pension scheme for 20 years before you can collect a pension. I don't think you can collect until your 60 or something like that. I know Americans can collect it and I am pretty sure Canadians can collect it.

Also, if you want you can also have your pension money transfered to U.S. Social Security.

Of course, you will be an old geezer collecting your pension money in Korea if that is really want you want to be doing.

When you finish working for an employer at the end of a contract, you can get your money. If you re-sign with the same employer, you have to wait until you finish working for that employer.

I was told that you can live in the US or Canada and the Korean government will mail the pension check to you. I wasn't sure about the time frame on how long you had to pay into it in order to benefit.

They guy I heard it from went further to say that the Korean government doesn't like to reveal the fact that Canadians and Americans can collect pension. I'd say 99% of the foreigners take the refund check when they leave so its never been a problem.

That sounds pretty sweet to me. I'd be happy to leave mine in and get monthly dosh when I'm an old git. I wonder though how much you can actually get back here. I mean, do you only get back what you put in plus a tiny little? Or do you get a fixed amount for the rest of your life regardless of how long you live...

10 years what? Living in Korea, then you can take it?

If you mean it takes 10 years to get after you leave, that's not true.
