Wonder if anyone can give me some advice here. My contract is up in September, yet my director approached me this week about resigning for another year.
I haven't decided if I want to say in Korea for another year, but if I were to stay, what do people generally ask for in order to sign another contract?
Any and all advice would be appreciated! |

For the most part, the generic terms and conditions (insurance, severance pay, pension, etc.) of your contract will stay the same in your second year regardless of where you teach.
You will not have quite the negotiating room with the public school system (SMOE) as you would a private school or hagwon.
Regarding salary, working schedule, housing, bonuses, and vacation time, I would recommend that you ask exactly for what it is you want and ignore what others have negotiated in the past. Don't place your value on what others have negotiated. If a school really wants to keep you they will usually work with you to find a win win situation. If the school can't at least meet some of your requests, then perhaps it's time to find a school that can.
Don't ever forget this point. The successful hagwons are cash cows and they can pay you whatever the hell they want, bottom line! |
