|

1. HOGWANS ... kids should finish school and then play, relax, work, or play sports. They should not be forced to study with a bunch of unqualified teachers.
2. NATIONALISM ... sure, if you're like SPINOZA and you're from a great country, maybe you need a little more. But the level of nationalism here is sickening. Especially cuz it's sooo unwarranted.
3. MUSIC/TV/MOVIES ... so very, very bad. Plus, why would we want to pay for stuff that is essentially recycled Western product? I'm sure all married folk here would agree that having to watch Korean TV is the worst part of being married to a local. (yeah, yeah. I know: "leave the room and read a book.")
4. BATHROOMS... I know some folk on here like'em, but I feel they absolutely blow. Nothing worse than dashing for the bathroom and ending up with a soaking wet sock.
5. MANNERS ... to heck with political correctness: we're just superior in this area. Aside from their drinking routines I see nothing here that is done better than back home. |

My list:
1) Hakwons. I hope our education system never becomes so institutionalised that we force our kids to jump through hoops just for the sake of it.
2) Pop culture. It's hard to get past this one.
3) Jajangmyun. First time I went to a Korean Chinese restaurant I ordered it because it looked like Shanghai noodles. Christ was I disappointed.
4) Christianity. Where do they get this stuff from?
5) The ambition to succeed. If everyone wanted to be a CEO, we wouldn't have a working class, and there'd be a lot more failed businessmen and broken families. |

There's a big difference between studying things way above your proper level in some bizarre attempt to "educate" versus going to Kaplan or Sylvan to be tutored or to study for something actually relevant to the rest of your life. I'd bet they aren't being forced to....at least no where near the manic level here....
And also....going to Kaplan, Sylvan or any other learning center is not seen as some type of status symbol and can be provided for free (in the U.S.) if you qualify....
In the end..who in the hell studies for their SATs in elementary school? That's what some parents do with all those crazy English tests they sign their kids up for... |

We wouldn't have to import these. We have enough of our own, thanks. |

1. Yep. Hagwons are good for nation building, but crap for kids.
2. Nationalism?? Are you kidding me? Name one country that doesn't have this. Doesn't need importing because everyone already has that one.
3. KTV I don't watch, still I'm amazed by England's fascintation with Neighbours, Home and Away and other shows from home I don't watch either. The music sucks, what little I've heard, but I don't really listen to lyric laden songs that I don't understand. The movies in Korea, are awesome, and up there with the world's best. I don't know what you've been watching, but I get the feeling you've already made up your mind without trying to find some good stuff. Are you one of those guys who refuses to "read" a movie? You're missing out.
4. Bathrooms. Well I never get the soggy sock, so I'm not too worried.
5. Get over yourself. With some of the attitudes on display, just on this board, you'd have a hard time saying rudeness isn't already well stockpiled in the west. |

1. Totally agree. Let kids be kids.
2. I think patriotism in limited amounts is good. Nationalism (especially empty nationalism) in the case of Korea is unneeded and unwanted. We have some, but less than here. I agree, we don't need it.
3. Movies are decent. Music is reasonable, but most people hate it. TV shows blow ass. Agreed.
4. I partially agree. But I can handle it. Not agreed.
5. Their manners here are atrocious. Agreed. And it's not cultural. It's all about intent. When you intend to bump into people or push people b/c you think you have the God-given right to the whole sidewalk, that is rude in any country in the world.
I will axe #4 and add my number 6
6. Fashion: Nothing like a freaking dragon and buttons and zippers everywhere on young people's shirts. Why not throw in a chest exposing shirt to the mix. Add a faggy hair style and you have a poofter.
Then on the other side of the coin, we have stupid sun visors, pants pulled up to their mid-chest, and ajummas who don't know the bra was invented years ago. Oh yeah, can't leave out the ugly flowered shirts that ajummas like so much. The fashion here sucks (except for mini-skirts).

1. GOOD for nation buildling? Interesting.
2. Guess I should have specified "rampant, racist, out of touch with reality" kind of nationalism. Korea has the West beat by a long shot... suppose my home comes in a distant second.
3. To be fair, I've only watched about a dozen Korean movies and pretty much laughed at them all. Rarely original, low quality produtcion, general feeling of "let's just get this movie made to fill the national quota" I don't ask a lot from films, mostly just entertainment. I'm not the anal, arrogant type to watch a flick like Braveheart and leave the theater steaming "ugh. the historical inaccuracies are unbearable"
4. All I really want is a dry floor without having to mop up after my shower.
5. Sorry. We win. A gross generalization to be sure, and take it as just that, but we win. And if you want to judge by internet manners... you should try reading some Korean websites. They make the most hateful Dave's poster seem rather moderate. |

Since I work at a howgron and tacitly agree to its existence, I can't put it on the list.
What we shouldn't adopt: one hour a week of Family Time.
In regards to family time, I am not talking about looking at you grandpa's balls at the bathhouse. |
