What triggered this thread are two recent incidents of Hollywood boys gone bad.

First, Snoop-Dog, the ugliest rapper on the planet, gets banned from not one but three countries because of his offensive lyrics and pre-show antics.

His PR crew has complained and his lawyer is looking into lawsuits in these countries. Never mind that the U.K. is hardly a place of cultural close-mindedness.

China also banned Dog and in this instance they were resisting his negative influence on Chinese youth. Good for them.

Now we've got Richard Mr. Culturally Sensitive Gere mauling Sheffy, an Indian actress, at a large public ceremony. And he hasn't shown one ounce of remorse despite knowing Indian sensibilities before he kissed and bear-hugged her. Hollywood meet Bollywood.

I firmly believe that liberal Hollywood types have developed a sense of entitlement all their own. They believe their star status makes them immune from much of the reaction the rest of us would receive if engaged in similar bad behavior. They are coddled by the courts in some instances (O.J.) and gain an inflated sense of themselves from their overweening fan base.

What do you think is the cause of this recent increase in Hollywood types acting badly abroad?

A better question is what causes bitter old men to hide overseas for years?

They need training courses to show them other cultures are different.

The average esl teacher has a better grasp of the concept of culture difference than a Hollywood star.

Which is worse?

a) Madonna going on regular baby snatching raids to malawi.

b) Richard Gere giving a woman an unwelcome and overdone mauling.

c) Liz Hurley wearing cowhide at the temple to Daisy.

Probably because MOS went on a campaign devoting all his posts to ridiculing it. Steve enjoys annoying people annoyed by it. IOW, I don't think calling for him to stop will work.

To grab mind share? The ideas should carry themselves. Maybe EFL will go one better and start all his subject lines with "FREE SEX".

The problem expressed by the OP I find is also a problem with some inexperienced American travelers, a sense that local laws don't apply to them. A simple phone call to the American embassy and a Delta force will be dispatched to rescue them.

I don't think this belief is found in American ESL teachers. However, living in a border city, I met more than my fair share of American day trippers nonplussed that their radar detector was taken by the local traffic cop. How dare they!

I don't think they come to this belief because they are stupid or bad. I suspect it's just one of those fictions some Americans come to believe based on TV and movies. (Some) Canadians believe a Canadian flag on their backpack will open the doors of the world to them ("OH YOU'RE CANADIAN! We're just about to lynch an American in your honor!" to paraphrase one of my American friends). (Some) Americans believe they enjoy some kind of diplomatic immunity abroad or the locals fear upsetting delicate international relations if they dare throw them in the clink.

We could extend it further that pretty much all Westerners who hire child prostitutes in SE Asia or Cuba take the attitude it's okay there although they would never do it back in their own nations. Back home it would seem a crime to them and they would sign petitions to keep such people out of their neighborhood.

Or hell, 99% of drivers don't mind speeding through YOUR neighborhood but don't dare speed through THEIR neighborhood.

As with Abu Graibh, soldiers in the field acting badly and Republicans in, apparently, every area of the government, I'm going with the fine example set by the current President and the Cadre that runs him.

Do you not recall Bush's massage of the German Chancellor? And he a long-married Christian....

mindmetoo:

Well said; nothing I should add.

EFLTrainer:

Had Bush massaged the shoulders of the wife of the former Chancellor, Shroeder, I would have fully understood. At least she is a hottie.

But your analogy doesn't work, again. Both are Westerners, although from my time living in Germany it is generally true that Germans don't like a lot of personal contact with people who are only acquaintances.

MilwaukieDave:

I'm 51 years old. Is that ancient to you? Oh, I forgot, Cartman is only a teenager. Anyone over 20 is old to him.

Octavius:

C'mon, you're shrewd enough to know I don't blame Jews for anything. Wink

Junior:

Bruddah, say it again.

Oh, and I forgot about Madonna and her "religious pilgrimages."

I much older then 20, but still not as crabby as you. So tell me what crime has you hiding out in Asia?
