I'm usually able to figure out explanations but this ones got me stumped.

Why is 'make a list of the advantages of living in a city' all right but 'There are many advantages of living in a city' sound wrong, with the 'of' sounding like it should be changed to 'to'.

I believe either "of" or "to" will work, and "to" sounds better to you because it's the usage more familiar to you.

for questions like this, your best bet is to check out a concordancer.

here's one: http://www.lextutor.ca/concordancers/concord_e.html

type in your word, and it will list hundreds of examples of that word used in sentences drawn from millions of books, magazines, conversations...

you can then see what has more usage (in this case, "of" is far more common) as well as the context in which they were used, which can help you determine the difference in usage (seems negligible here).

ROBT.

Beaten to the punch. That's a great site for other things, too; so check out its homepage:

I would suggest that (1) uses 'of' because it follows the pattern 'the...of...' and (2) should use 'to' because, well because certain words go together with certain prepositions in common usage and 'to' happens to be the one in this case.

In other words, use of 'of' sounds wrong where there is no preceding 'the' (although, conversely, use of 'to' is not ruled out by the presence of 'the').

Actually 'of' in (1) is being used as part of a possessive but not in (2). That would make sense. Thanks.
