A great American journalist and author who won nearly all of journalism's top prizes before he was thirty, largely for his stellar reporting from Vietnam. The world has lost an incredible talent.

Some of his great works include: The Best and the Brightest, The Breaks of the Game, War in a Time of Peace and and upcoming book on the Korean war.

As well, Once Upon a Distant War (by William Prochnau) is an excellent telling of the early Vietnam War years through the eyes of the journalists who covered it, such as Halberstam, Neil Sheehan, Peter Arnett and others.

Anyone who's read Halberstam's superb "The Reckoning" will find it fitting that this happened so soon after Halberstam passed:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/12/22/business/toyota.php

"Toyota Motor said Friday that it planned to sell 9.34 million vehicles next year, a figure that analysts said would be big enough to put it ahead of the troubled General Motors as the world's largest auto company."

What a great journalist. "The Reckoning", "The Best and the Brightest", "The Powers That Be", "The Fifties", "The Summer of 49". He did sports journalism as a hobby and was still one of the best.
