|
|
What should I go with? I'm back home right now, and I decided to just upgrade the ram on my laptop and buy a bigger external, because I'll be too poor when I get back to Korea in 3 weeks to buy a new desktop in the near future.
I like this deal for an enclosure,
and this one for an external. Any suggestions?
Also, has anyone tried an external via firewire connection? Does it offer any noticeable difference? Experience only please, not speculation (I've read enough of that online already ).
I download a crapload of HD torrent files (often 4-30GB), so data transfer rate is huge. Any suggestions? |

In terms of speed they will probably be the same. Thay both have the same interfaces (USB2 and IEEE1394).
It all depends on what system you connect them to. |

I know that between them the interfaces are the same, just wondering if there are any actual advantages/disadvantages other than installation differences.
Also, which one, between USB2 and firewire, should I use, because I have both ports available?
Thanks! |

e-SATA.
If you have a SATA drive in your desktop they give you a pass through cable for it.
If it's for a laptop then buy a PCMCIA card.
1.5Gb/s for PCMCIA or 3.0Gb/s for desktop straight to mother cable.
All of the drives I looked at came with a USB 2.0 port as well. There was a very nice one with e-SATA and three USB hosts for 165K for 400GB. |

As you most likely know, USB2 has a speed of 480Mbps while firewire is 400Mbps.
However, firewire (from my experiance) sustains its speeds more while USB2 fluctuates depending on what you are doing.
To me there is not really much difference in the long run and you wont go wrong either way. There really is no wrong choice. |

Thanks. I think I will pay a little more for one of these two with firewire as an option, simply because then I save all 4 available USB ports. |

Actually, prices seem to be a bit cheaper in the states.
The only problem would be the power (110 vs 220). You can get a transformer, or buy it here and not worry until you return.
Also, the device may be able to handle both voltages, check first. If so then buy it in the states. |

Only you and I are thinking that.
The other two are just ignoring the suggestions and gazing deeply into each others eyes. |

The reason Giant isn't talking about eSata is b/c the drives are bloody expensive right now for anything resembling enough storage space. The OP wants a big drive for his HD torrents. The drive you linked to squirrel would hold maybe 3 or 4 of his bigger files. He wants a 500GB drive, or close.
