|
|
I put this in "General discussion" because it affects all of us who travel to and from Korea from overseas.
I went back home for the first time in quite awhile last week. When I was there, the security condition at the airport had just been raised to orange. It's a funny thing, because the day I had left over 3 years ago, it had also, "just been raised" to orange. Seems like they're always, "just raising it". Its still a pain in the butt to get through security when arriving from overseas... In the US, its about 2x as annoying because of the extra procedures they have.
Then there's this article:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070501/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_terrorism
So, cases of terror world-wide are actually up???? I traveled all overt the world, and security at all airports is greater than it was 10 years ago.. or at least it seems that way. Yet, i dont seem to be hearing a greater number of reports of terror in the news.
Anyway, my general feeling here is that terror is NOT worse than it was before. The report in the article above was published by the State Dept. of the USA.. and I think strings are pulled for them to create a continuing perpetuation of fear for political reasons.
Anyone else care to comment? |

Uh...terrorism doesn't just happen at the airport.
I think most people qualify the daily sectarian martyrdom operations in Iraq as terrorist acts, which is probably a big reason for the spike. |

you're probably more likely to be struck by lightning, so i don't think it's worth getting worked up about. |

The Korea Times today has an article about terror attacks having risen recently. Sorry, don't have a link, it was the print edition I was holding. |

Since when has terrorism been called terror. Is this supposed to make it seem scarier, or is it terrorism's cool street moniker.
Is it because we can make great half rhymes like "Beware Terror" or "Look over there, Terror".
I propose for simplicity lets do this for all isms. Any funny ones? I don't have time right now have to go to work. |

Iraq's neighbors Iran and Syria have been fueling violence in Iraq by providing weapons and training to militant groups and allowing fighters to cross into Iraq to attack American troops. Also, That has led to more fighters pouring into Afghanistan, where U.S. troops are battling a resurgent Taliban movement. The spike comes from the eruption of sectarian killings and bombings that followed the February 2006 Al'Quida bombing of the al-Askariya mosque in the Iraqi city of Samarra. |

I only worry about mechanical and human operational errors when flying and riding any other sort of public transit such as a speeding bus. I would say that flying on a commercial airline is the safest mode of public transportation.
Just sit back and enjoy the smooth ride. |

I'm not sure what the wikipedia page on terrorism has to do with what i was saying. I just found it funny to hear the word terror used in that way. Thats it. I've never heard it referred to like that before and my family does live in Northern Ireland. I understand the concept of terrorism. |

Yeah, but do you seriously think terrorists are going to target a plane going to or from Korea? Probably not. I wouldn't worry about it. |
