So the rehearsals for the up and coming sports day continue.

So far its been 75% principal droning over the loudspeakers, 20% children standing in circles with batons, and 5% singing the national anthem.

I assume the kids will finally get to have PHYSICAL EXERCISE for the first time on the actual day itself?

My favorite part of sports day is not the day itself, but the days upon days it takes to practice and prepare for sports day. Seems like they should just call this sports month.

Hehehe

I just found out that my classes are cancelled for today because of the rehearsal for the sports day, which is next Thursday.

My ratio is 60% principal barking over the loudspeakers, 20% children standing in lines, and 20% screeching along/chanting to some awful loud music (not the national anthem).

Snap.

If it was up to me, I'd have the kids in training 3 times a week, about a month beforehand in events like 100m, 200m, 1500m, 3000m: long jump, triple jump, high jump: javelin, pole vault, and relay races. Thats what I call a good sports day.

Still I guess a ribbon/baton display is as good for their physical well-being as all of the above combined.

Sports day is awesome! My school has been preparing for ours for a week and a half. Its been like a vacation. I'd say 70% of my classes are canceled due to the kids practicing. The past 8 days have been heaven.

I'm another rarin' to go teacher sidelined by sports day rehearsals. Apparently English isn't the center of the Universe (public school elementary).

I agree with "Sports Month". Laughing

Lots of my classes are cancelled as well. I am not sure about the full scope of the "sports month". I think it's total waste of teacher's and student's time.

Do you teach at middle schools?

I was told there is a "mini sports day" next Friday. My morning class is cancelled, don't know about my afternoon classes. The kids will do a 5km run/walk.

I taught 1 class today and all of my classes for next Monday-Thursday are cancelled due to midterms. I think sports day is in about 2 weeks, so hopefully I'll get another break.

The first graders are all outside practicing again... but this time they're all wearing on their heads those foam mesh/net things that they package those big pears in... Shocked
I can't wait for the real thing tomorrow to see what the rest of the get-up is, and what the other classes will 'wear'.

Sports Day? Does it only last a day here?

Thailand we had sports week which required at least a months build up to it with students practicing and whatnot.

Hehe, yeah same here. I'm playing volleyball with the teachers. We're competing against another school's teachers this afternoon. My principal is so big on sports, if we win I just know we'll be going out for a big 회식.
Funny thing too, whenever we practice, the principle serves the volleyballs. The other teachers are such suckups to him that even if the balls are a little bit out, the teachers all tell him it was in and start clapping and ooohing and ahhhing

They've been practicing for a few weeks now. Theer's been very little of my principal talking. There's a fair bit of shouting by other teachers, though. The 3rd grade teacher is teaching them dance moves to "Mickey you're so fine," and the 5th grade teachers are showing them moves to "Arirang." They're also doing relay races and the national anthem and a few Korean songs.

Even after practicing every day about half the kids are still clueless. I mean, they're doing Korean songs, with instructions in Korean by Korean teachers. I'll have to remember this the next time a teacher complains that a class hasn't magically learned something in my class.

Unfortunately, I won't be getting to take the day off. I'll get to watch the festivities all day long.
