I keep seeing that number pop up and wondered like hell what it was all about. Didn't look like the numbers from Lost.
A while ago someone found a prime number that if you then represented as a binary (11101101011101101110 etc) would be the exact binary of the EXE for the original DVD crack. So the number whole number system contains software that violates the DMCA. The reason it had to be a prime number is because prime numbers are archived. They are important in of themselves and one can't claim a prime number serves only the purpose of being illegal computer code.
Then there was the US government that defined encryption software beyond 56 bits as a munition, on par with a tank or cluster bomb. One could not export this munition without government approval. Someone printed the PERL code on a tshirt. The tshirt that doubles as a munition. Oish.
Yeah, laws written by politicians who think the net is a series of tubes really, really don't keep up with what's going on in the alpha geek labs. |

So what exactly can these numbers be used for? What's linux? I remember hearing about it back in college....
In short, I'm interested in getting free stuff, but I'm lazy.
Can somebody spell it out for me? I'll owe you one if you do. |

Geeks, God bless 'em, can use that code to copy the new HD-DVD's. It's a way round the copy protection code. |

Geeks are the new Communists.
They're both savages anyway, so let them lose their souls. |

It's an interesting story, and more than I tech one I think. The number itself is almost besides the point as you have to be really tech-savvy to even know what to do with it.
NYT has a good article on it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/03/technology/03code.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1178211895-DkESHHmfkl/l/wSz8esl5A
The number has been kicking around for months, it just blew up yesterday.
Interesting how it all came to a head on a social networking site, whose owners tried to quash it, but were overwhelmed by people using the tools on the very site they had created.
I think we're only starting to understand how these sites work, despite the fact that they've been around for quite some time. |
