At my Public elementary school - occasionally (once a month) - there is a Korean man aged maybe 24-29 years old - who obviously has mental problems - as he appears a bit "simple"/crazy....
who comes into the school with a half-cut/peeled pineapple in one hand and a long sharp knife (pointed outwards) in the other hand....
he walks from floor to floor of the school - entering every classroom (uninvited) - holding his pineapple and the knife pointed outwards - (as if he is about to stab someone) - and walks directly up to the teachers in each classroom - interrupting their (afternoon-classes) teaching - to "beg" them - (in a quite threatening manner) - to buy a slice of his pineapple....
this has always scared all the teachers and sometimes the students (aged 7~12) - as he doesn't give up and go away with a simple and polite "No thanks or shiro" from the teachers....
(mind you most of the korean teachers are all female) - and no matter how hard they try to tell him "no thanks" he keeps asking them to buy a piece - whilst the knife is pointed/waving around at them - (with the pretense - that he wants to slice them a peice)....
most of the teachers at my school are too afraid to stay after 2/3/4pm at the school now - as this is the usual time he comes....
I have talked to the office staff and asked them why he is allowed to come inside the school building - as he obviously has "mental problems" - obviously has no children at the school - and is scaring the teachers/students, and acts in a threatening dangerous manner....
they have told me - there is nothing they can do to prevent him from coming - as its a public school (open to the public) - with no security etc etc...
Even though this guy does not pose a threat to me - I find it amazing in a country - whose citizens want to consider themselves advanced and developed to have these kind of problems... and no solution to them.....
anybody else - have similar things happen at their schools - when obviously there seems to be a lack of security with "psychos" walking in and out of school buidings and classrooms.......?

| WTF? Most schools request parents to wait by the front gates and not come on to school grounds to meet their kids. Where the hell is your VP and the PE teachers when this guy is roaming around? If that happened at my school I'm pretty sure the PE teacher (a former competative discus thrower) would give him one clear warning to *beep* off before he'd disarm him with a chair and kick his ass all the way to the end of the parking lot. |

| PS come to think of it we did have a weirdo start making his way towards our school and a guy from the admin. office yelled at him to get the *beep* away or the male staff would kick his ass. |

OK - in my school - as in most other Public elementary schools I have taught - the parents are usually (especially parents of grade 1 & 2 students) still standing each day outside the classroom door of their kids classroom watching each lesson and everything that happens in the classroom....
usually after March/April this usually stops - as parents of new grade 1 kinds find it hard to "let go" of their kiddies hand - and accept the fact that they are now at school... however at my school we seem to have more "overly-attached parents" than other schools I have taught at -
many of the teachers at my school have covered the windows and doors with posters to try to block anybody outside from seeing in - but it hasn't worked so far...
anyway - the two (2) VP's at my school one female and one male - both old enough to be grandparents and soon to retire - are usually both either glued to their computer monitors in the office - or the male VP is outside chatting to the maintenance men- whilst puffing on his ciggarette.. (yeah - he smokes inside the school/classrooms too)....
Oh - the maintenance men are both pretty-much useless too - they are usually in their small shed out the side of the school eating ramien, drinking soju and smoking away whilst watching their tv in their small maintenance-shed...
the PE teacher - well he's still young... maybe 26-28 years old - and usually hangs out in the teachers room chatting up the young female korean teachers as he is still single and desperately seeking a girlfriend.... and although he seems better than the PE teacher we had last years who was always busy on the playground and carpark - hugging and kissing small male students.... the PE teacher also is useless....
anyway - the female Korean teacher in the classroom next to mine - has now started locking her door - whilst teaching and leaving early everyday - because she is afraid of this psycho... I was wondering next time - what legal things can I do and "get away with" the next time this psycho enters either mine or the korea teachers classroom next to mine - the next time he visits? |

Then strap on a pair and get this ass the hell outta your school. I don't see how this is an issue. Your left hand takes the knife-arm (am assuming it is in his right hand - if not then please switch my instructions to match) at the wrist, your right hand pushes him over backward (use your right leg behind his if necessary) and disarm him, then get him the bloody-hell outta your school. If no one there wants to do it then raise hell until the local renta-cops show up and do it for you. No brainer in my book. This is not "bravado"... this should happen ONCE at a school with kids in attendance, and not again.
And yes, I have man-handled nutjobs out of my schools in the past, with the aid and assistance of the Korean staff. No one needs these fools in a school. |

This is quite possibly the worst self-defense advice ever given.
A simple flick of the wrist and this guy will carve your arm up.

Agreed. I doubt tackling a man of dubious motives armed with a knife is the best way to go.
I agree with the sentiment of the offensive though.
OP Why not call the cops? If you don't speak enough Korean hand it to a student to tell them what's going on. If they don't respond appropriately keep doing it until you're nuisance enough to prod them into taking some action. Raise the issue at your next teacher's meeting. Tell your Principal you feel threatened, and if it happens again you will be giving serious thought to quitting.
Basically make some waves, and force the people whos job it is to resolve this to do so. |

I thought about your reply and the "flick of a wrist" thing implies he is holding it in a stabbing position, in which case yes, grabbing the wrist is a bad idea. The OP said he was holding it "out" implying that he asking for someone to carve the pineapple, therefore I stand by my attack. I wish text could convey the flow of movement better, but I will agree that if one is not confident enough in these sorts of manoeuvers then they should not be attempted. Raise hell and get the renta-cops in on this.
That and I have been in a bad mood all day. Hopefully this will brighten yours: Knife defense |

Isn't he just a pineapple salesman? I've seen these guys from time to time; they go around slicing off (hygienic?) samples of their produce, so that if you like it, you can buy a whole one from them.
A pain in the backside he might be, but not a psycho. Ha, can you imagine some guy wandering around a Western school with a knife? Only in Korea! |

Yep, the same Korea that allows kids to carry cutesy face-slashing Exacto knives in their pencil cases. When I first came here I was shocked to see this. But little surprises me nowadays. |

| Maybe it's really good pineapple! Sure, your school should prevent these guys from coming in, but if they don't, you're just going to look like an ass for kicking him out. While he may be scaring people off, it may turn out he's the uncle of the principal or something. Who knows? No reason to get all bent out of shape. It's Korea! |
