This is wierd. When I run bittorrent to download shows, it slows the computer down to the point of almost hanging up on me, even if I close the bittorrent program.
When I restart though, it works perfectly fine and fast as can be, until I do bittorrents.
I want to download torrents while using websites without waiting for the Sun to come up.
Anyone know how to fix this? |

Two theories:
1. You're using Azureus.
2. You have a really slow upload speed and bittorrent is maxing it out so your internet is slowing to a halt. |

Which bittorrent program are you running?
What is your internet connection?
How fast are your torrents coming down?
What sort of computer do you have?
I would guess that if you are downloading popular programs they are coming down fairly quickly and there is little bandwidth left over for the webpages.
So go into the bittorrent program and limit the bandwidth it can use.
There is only so much you can get down at a time.

another vote for Utorrent.
Also if your PC is older and has a slower CPU and/or low ram then you'll always be slowed down. the key is to only download 1 or 2 torrents and throttle your download/upload speeds if you are using the computer at the same time you are downloading. |

I think the guys have already mentioned the likely possibilities.
Another possibility is that your bittorrent program was shut down abruptly, maybe because you hit the restart button when something froze, and now the BT program needs to re-hash all the data of the files it is downloading.
This will freeze up older PC's for as much as 45 minutes. |

I have a 1.86 GHz laptop and Azureus gave me grief for the first time two days ago, after running constantly for months. It would, about every 30 seconds, do a disk read that would lock the computer up for about 1/2 a second. Annoying when watching video.
A rehash does not seem to have any effect.

You can also turn down the number of active torrents and the number of connections you allow at one time. |

Agreed with everything said here.
I had a celeron 2.2 with, initially, 256 mb of ram - uTorrent would shut my computer down. I could hardly do anything. I stuck in an additional 512mb of ram and it was like night and day.
So, if you have any ram slots free, I would advise you to start by bumping up your memory a bit. |
