I'm worried about 2 things when i get to seoul:
1. there not being any clubs which play good music (for me this is psytrance, techno and IDM)
2. not getting into clubs because i'm too old (i'm only 34!)
is there a freeparty scene in/around seoul?
please, will someone put my jittery nerves to rest; i'll be arriving in seoul in a couple of weeks.

I'm older than you, and get into clubs, but they suck. If you're looking for the stuff you listed in (1), you're in the wrong country. Sometimes a foreign DJ comes in for a "dance party", but that's maybe once a month in the summer. |

Its funny that in a place which has pounding techno type stuff comming out of nearly every shop in the middle of the day, its hard to find a place to really shake your booty on the dance floor at night.
I get the feeling Koreans are a little threatened by such liberal girations as natuarally occur when one enjoys a good dance. Still - beer goggles/closing your eyes help a half way decent club. They can be found in the bigger metroplitian cities. Just don't expect to have much in the way of fun with your fellow patrons.
One tends to do the party tornado - turn up dance like crazy leave everyone standing .
Thinking about it its the same back at the 'coolest' clubs in London. Too self concious.. Not at all like a free party. Sorry! Korea is for cold turkey! |

Plenty of techno clubs in Hongdae. The music is fine but the atmosphere sucks.
You will find psytrance in Hongdae as well at smaller venues, you just have to keep an eye out for the flyers. Atmosphere at those parties tends to be a bit better because its not as mainstream.
I doubt you'll be refused entrance to any electronica club due to your age. Hip-hop clubs yes. |

What is a freeparty? I've never seen tickets to a rave less than $30. Over here you could probably get in to a cheap one for 10 000w. |

A freeparty is a big party put on by the drug dealers (aka sound systems) for all their *happy* patrons to go wild at. Its a tradition that has evloved, in recent times (God knows where the party comes from) from the rave scene that started in the UK in the 80's.
They share many traits: they are often illegal (held in public or private spaces without permission, even though freeparties are also held on private land sometimes owned by said dealers), usually outside in a rural or urban setting, known by word of mouth, hard to get to, day-glow and big fun.
Ok, not all of them are put on by drug dealers! They do have a political heritage as a protest movement. E.g. Reclaim the Streets, who put on parties in the middle of motorways. Not quite sure why exactly, but it probably seemed like a good idea at the time.
More latterly psy-trance has become popular all over, like house did after rave. I guess Infected Mushroom are trying to be the next Prodigy. |

I highly doubt he will even get turned away from hip-hop clubs, unless he looks really old for his age. Back in 2003, I even saw a 40ish ajumma dancing it up at Matmata. |

Sounds like a fun time for hippies in another country, sounds like stupidity if it were in Korea. |

Aww, this thread got me thinking of a past experience. It was hilarious. My Korean church went to a club on New Years Eve. It was so awkward and they had Korean techno or whatever and the ajumas were breaking it down on the floor. I was laughing so hard, I was choking and tearing up. not only were they dressed funny, but danced funny. I guess you just had to be there. It truly was the funniest dancing I've ever seen in my life.
Speaking of techno clubs, there is a really awesome club in Dallas, TX called the clubhouse. They have green lasers shooting and like putting out linear shapes in different directions. It was so cool because when the laser was flashing, I thought I had a blinking thing in my shirt, and it was the laser. haha Plus the foam party. The bass was sooo good, you can hear the club vibrate and there were many stages, people would go on there. I miss Dallas. Here is Austin, they enjoy the ghetto hip hop or hippy music instead of techno. Me and my friends would dance from 4am to like 8-10am and b e dead tired the next day.
From what I've seen of the clubs in Korea on youtube, looks like those clips from sbs dramas. I almost feel embarassed for the actors dancing like that. My mom said they have to dance like that to show their innocense to prove they are not sluts and clean minded.
Anyways, I'd imagine if you're going to a country for techno, you'd want to be in Germany where it originated. I once met a group of German guys travelling in Texas, and they had some awesome techno cds from Germany they gave me. They sounded coool, that they have foam parties and one club had glass floor with sharks swimming underneath and stuff. |

Saw a poster for Infected Mushroom today and one for Paul Van Dyk in Itaewon. Are Infected Mushroom any good? Never heard of them - feel out of the music loop living in Korea.
There's also the free DJ festival next weekend down by the river. |

I'm not 100% sure, but IF it was Infected Mushroom who were DJing (mb it was just some of their records or equally well may just have been a recomendation) i thought they were F**king EXCELLENT when I heard 'em.
Bear in mind, however, I was never really into psy-trance until that moment when the sounds just seemed AMAZING and the bunch of wires surrounding a dodgy prosthetic head, near the DJ was ALIVE, BREATHING its tentacles WRITHING, the water in the lake was a MIRACLE, etc. ..
Or, so a friend told me. |

Are Infected Mushroom coming to Korea? I would go and see them. I have a couple of albums and like them.
