I want to do a music lesson with my (very low level!) high schoolers next week. Does anyone have any songs that have worked well in a class? I've heard Westlife is pretty popular. We don't have a particular topic we're studying, so I don't need a song to go along with anything, just a song that they'll like. One class requested singing a "pop song," so I assume they want a newer song.
& are there any good sites that have a big selection of music videos to download? I'd like to show them the video. I've found a few sites that show it, but you can't download it. That's a pain, in case something happens with the internet connection when I want to show the video, plus I want to add text.
My plan is to print the lyrics to the song with a few words missing. We'll watch the video once, then once again with text so they'll hopefully get all the words. Then maybe talk about what the lyrics mean, then sing the song together once or twice. Does that sound like a solid lesson, or does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks! |

'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is good, which you can watch on Youtube.
It's really easy to get carried away and choose something you like over something which will be beneficial for them. Make your choice based on the clarity of the vocals. Whether the song is popular or new is not important. |

Ddeubel (sp) has a site which features video karaoke. I'm pretty sure that I saw that "Lion Sleeps Tonight" on the site. There are also some korean songs which the kids should know. Sorry I don't have the site, maybe someone else could provide it |

Thanks for the recommendation xcustomx.
Yes, I'd recommend going to my folder Karaoke and using some of the worksheets there, along with the karaokes and downloading the player. Also in my video karaoke folder are many videos, many of which I've produced/edited and which will work.
The key is really focusing on the language. Too often video has TOO much stimulation and takes away from the language learning. I tend to stress that teachers use the karaoke which really focuses on language, more often. But it all depends on your goals.
I've put together quite a few anime which kids enjoy. I'd also recommend "If I had a million dollars." Lots of spin off activities you could do . A real easy one in the karaoke folder is the lesson, based around the Titanic song. Whole real interesting lesson there. But other videos too and I'd also stress to the students to visit the site themselves and use for self learning. That is my goal, not really teacher tools/material but having a place where post teaching , students can reuse materials freely and openly and begin that so valuable process of being life long, engaged and motivated, "lifers"....
