A new study raises some interesting questions. I can't say I understand it all, but I do find it interesting.

As some realize we're dying & being "reborn" ... every single moment.

A lot like a SNAKE shedding its skin Idea

From a spiritual point of view, every cell has its own soul, and there is one particular predominating soul for the entire body. If that (Vedic) view is correct, then as soon as that predominating soul exits the body - when its life term is up - there's no way the body as a whole will regain consciousness - even though so many cells and organisms may remain living for a while.

However, sometimes a body - due to some "accident" - may no longer be a suitable place for the predominating soul, and it will be forced to exit before it's time (pre-determined by breath count...) is up ... In that case, if doctors are able to make timely repairs, the soul may re-enter and continue animating its assigned body...
