US 'to tighten rules on Britons'
By Matt Frei
BBC News, Washington

The fertiliser bomb plot trial has brought the visa waiver into focus
The US government is reportedly seeking to tighten visa restrictions for British citizens of Pakistani origin.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff had discussed options with London about revising the visa waiver programme, the New York Times said.

It follows the conviction of five men - mostly of Pakistani origin - for a UK bomb plot linked to al-Qaeda.

The UK Home Office said it would be unacceptable to "single out citizens of any particular background".

The fertiliser bomb plot convictions highlight a problem which has quietly dogged relations between the US and its closest ally ever since 9/11.

[I do know the U.S. is basically making it extremely difficult for Pakistanis to immigrate to the U.S. I know a girl who married one, and she has been waiting for 2 years. They just keep stalling and doing background checks. They must have done six on the guy by now. ]

I don't know. But I told her she shouldn't have married someone from Pakistan, because they tend to be very religious. I am aware there was a secular scholar from there whose surname was Iqbal, but Pakistan is not a great place for a woman to live, and I suppose he wants to come to the U.S., but the U.S., I don't think, really wants Pakistanis. I mean if a person is a doctor and very educated then it might be easier to get approval. I am not sure. Approval from certain countries is becoming harder. I am sure there will be a debate in Britain over immigration considering the people arrested and the people protesting in their favour in the streets. That probably makes many a Brit angry. It is too bad since there are many decent people from South Asia.

In the 1980s the UK did ban NORAID members from entering the country, so fair play, their country their rules.

This is assuming they only ban anglo-pakistanis with dodgy backgrounds rather than every anglo-pakistani.

Imagine the uproar if every Irish-American was banned from the UK due to NORAID.

Other than to escape Britain's new feudal Orwellianism why would anyone want to go to the U.S. ?

Pity.
