hi,
i teach an adult conversational english class... all different levels. usually theres between 2-6 students in the class. every week we have a reading followed by a few questions to spark conversation. but i need something a little more to add some spark to the class, ya know? anyone have any bright ideas for activities, etc? thanks!!!!!!!

Try Jazz English Vol 1. The first few units are pretty basic, but it allows the better students to excel by allowing freedom when necessary. |

There are adult conversation English text books you can get. the one I'm using is called Person to Person, you can get it for 12,000 won. There are 3 levels and each lesson has a conversation topic and lots of good conversation exercises. My students really get talking. |

In my experience and opinion Cambridge New Interchange students book and workbook are the best.
If they are absolute beginners - us the INTRO book.
If slightly above absolute beginer level, then book 1.
I've used most of the texts out there and this is the best I've found. Helps if you get the version that has the audio cd with the listening exercises. |

I will paraphrase Sun Tze....."think as your enemy"......
Meaning, put yourself in their shoes and think and respond with authentic materials of your own making (communication questions, blank dialogues, discussion starters, debates, arguements, issues, pictures, music yatayata) that will engage them.....
think of their dilema, then develop........

This takes a bit of preparation, but it gets them going. It is a review activity, so use the vocab/topics from the last couple of classes. For example, if the topic is 'daily routines' prepare slips of paper with target language printed on them:
take the bus to work
eat breakfast
watch tv
go drinking with friends
go to a singing room
attend a meeting with your team
cook dinner
etc. (It is even better if you can elicit these topics from the students)
Fold up the slips of paper and put them in a small box or bag, put the class into teams. The strongest team member goes first. S/he picks a slip of paper and must explain the activity to the team without using any of the words on the card. The teams take it in turns to go. When all the cards have been used you start again, but this time the person who draws the card can only use one word to elicit the language on the card. After all the cards have been used in the one word scenario the students go through the cards again, but this time instead of eliciting the language with one word, or longer utterances that don't include the words on the card, the student uses a mime or action to try to get his/her team to say the language on the card. |
