Thompson likely gone from `Law & Order' By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
Mon May 14, 1:49 PM ET
NBC's top entertainment executive said Monday that he doesn't expect actor and potential Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson back on "Law & Order" next season.
NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly claimed no insider knowledge of Thompson's political plans, but his statement indicated the seriousness of Thompson's presidential musings. The former Tennessee senator has been making speaking appearances and blogging on issues in recent weeks as he considers a candidacy.
"It's pretty clear that Fred is going to be leaving the cast of the show no matter what," Reilly said at a news conference on NBC's fall schedule.
He later left the door slightly ajar by saying it was "highly unlikely" Thompson would be back. Thompson certainly wouldn't return to prime-time network television if he chooses to run, he said.
Thompson plays the district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's ripped-from-the-headlines New York-set criminal-justice show. NBC has picked up the series for its 18th season, but new episodes won't appear until next January after NBC's Sunday-night football series ends.
A Thompson spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment on Monday.
Even if Thompson were to decide against a candidacy and wanted to stay on "Law & Order," the timing may be tough. Many television series, including "Law & Order," will be going into production earlier than usual in coming months to stockpile episodes in the event of a strike by writers later this fall, Reilly said. |

He's a good man and he'll be a fine President.
Winning the GOP nomination-when he enters the race, it'll pretty much put McCain out. He's almost out of money, anyway. Then it's a 3-way race between Rudy, Fred, and Mitt. Rudy and Mitt favor abortion rights and oppose school prayer. Good luck with those positions in the south. |

| Don't forget Newt. Sounds like he'll get in later this year. |

| The conservatives might not be happy but the Republicans have two maybe three electable candidates. While the Republicans are way behind the Democrats nations nationally both Gullani and McCain match up well against Clinton or Obama in polls.I don't know if Thompson will . This maybe good news for conservatives but it is better news for Democrats. Newt would get killed by the Democrats. But the Republicans are dumb -they would rather nominate a candidate that agrees with them 90% and will probably lose the general election than a candidate that only agrees with them 80% that could win. |

Do not know whether I liked him better in Hunt for Red October or In the Line of Fire.

Mr. Dangerfield:
Thompson has a good chance of clinching the nomination if he puts forth a strong campaign effort. I'd consider voting for him if not McCain.
Newt has almost no chance if Thompson enters the fray, and rightly so.
Thompson is reminiscent of Reagan in many respects. The amiability factor is not to be underestimated--something Newt sorely lacks.
We shall see soon enough. He's getting older--this is his one shot. |

Wow, so there were a whole 4 posts about Republican Presidential hopefuls before someone mentioned Reagan.
Newt has absolutely no money right now, and his campaign will never make it off the ground if he waits until September to declare. He's far more polarizing than anyone on the Democratic side, probably even Kucinich. |

Fred Thompson has had some health concerns, but other than that he's a very serious candidate. He'll have no problem raising money and he's got a voting record from the US Senate where he voted the right way on the important issues. Then there's his name and face recognition.
McCain is having problems raising money. Rudy is having no problem raising money, but he has supported: gay rights, anti-gun initiatives, legalized abortion, and he has opposed school prayer. I'm not DEBATING these issues. I'm only pointing out that many of Rudy's positions are at odds with conservatives in the GOP.
I really like Rudy. Dennis Miller said that the "guys in the caves" are shaking in their boots at the possibility that he could be elected. Rudy would kick some major butt in the Middle East, that's for sure. He's going to have a lot of trouble when the primaries turn to the south and southwest. |

| The myth behind the Thompson quasi-candidacy is a dangerous one that bedevils both parties: If we just get a better communicator, people will love our policies. But once Thompson enters the race, he will have to either embrace or distance himself from GOP policies, which will either ruin his chances in the general election or hurt him with his conservative supporters. In short, he'll become just like any other candidatesomething he might not like after such a big buildup. Thompson also has a reputation for not enjoying the grind of campaigning. |
