Hello all...

I spent three years teaching in Korea and now I'm back in the States. Being an aspiring web developer, I'm giving serious thought to building a website that would make life easier for foreigners in Korea and/or those who are *thinking* about teaching in Korea but haven't made the leap yet.

Dave's obviously has a lot of great stuff, and there are plenty of other websites that have job boards and message boards. My question is...

What kind of information do you want or need but can't find?

Or... what kind of improvements would you like to see in a site that posts jobs and such?

If enough people say "I want this" or "I want that", chances are I'll wind up building it. Sky's the limit here - I have the tools to build just about anything and a network of contacts in Korea who would be more than willing to assist if needed.

All comments appreciated!

Thanks Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

We've already got this started. 150+ writers and 8000+ articles of advice and growing more every day. Plus Korean Language support forums. Also starting to publish books by expats, as well as a big sister site about to wrap development. Feel free to help the Galbijim Project, if you like. Smile

I'm already in the process of building a website myself. Still in the requirements analysis stage. I don't want to tell you what it is because I definately want to develop it, but if you want to work with me then that would be great! I'm using Drupal for the CMS.

ok there are probably a million forum type websites for living in korea but I would like to see a user friendly website that has all the FAQ for living in korea already stipulated.

I would like everything to be spelled out plain and simple. ie this is what you should do when u get off the plane. This is what you can cook with food from korean supermarkets...

Need an activity? You can go swimming here, you can go mountain clibing here.

Perhaps you could even catagorise activities, events (sporting, entertainment, theatre) etc into location (Iteawon, Jamsil etc

Make it like a survival guide, Lonely Planet style.

That's kind of where our city guides are going right now, as you can see in the examples of Daegu and Bundang:

As for step-by-step living guides, we're 2 chapters into our other guides:

Chronic - kalbijim looks great! Good luck with it~

tfunk - I'm interested in knowing what you're up to, but I understand your need to keep it quiet for the time being. If we knew each other I'd feel a lot better about partnering up... hope your dev cycle goes smoothly.

seoulman - I think Chronic's Kalbijim site is the place to go for what you're looking for. Thanks for the input, though.

spliff - If your less-than-constructive remark is directed at me, then you clearly didn't read my post. I'm trying to identify needs that AREN'T being met by the sites that already exist. If your comment was directed at Kalbijim, maybe you should look it over before trying to be sarcastic. It's quite different from other living-in-Korea websites.

I think the real wishes of good luck should be hoping that these guys with the ideas are able to hold their attention on their projects for longer than 6 months-1 year and are able to shrug off the naysayers and snickers during that time.

We started taking our lumps back in 2003. The shots and trolling about us that occured in the first year just galvanized our commitment to keep going, so we could at least stick it in the faces of the detractors. Lots of insecure losers over here don't want anyone to rise up, so its easy to attract the wrong attention. Just have to keep the perspective of remembering where the flack is coming from and not worry about it so much.

Don't take him too seriously, it's just his schtick to get someone to respond to him. Lots of those types on here. You're the guy wanting to make a difference and he's got a long pout to contend with. Different goals.
