So, I was thinking how nice it would be to live in the Philippines. I did some research, and fount this site which tells, "Average Monthly Wage Rates Of Selected Occupations in Selected Non-Agricultural Industries, Metro Manila":

According to this site, accountants, who make more than doctors, make a grand total of 17,113 pesos a month.

I am tempted to be sarcastic and say something like "Duh!" but I won't. The Philippines is still a very poor country yes. A long history of economic mismanagement and corruption have held the nation back. It is interesting to see that The Philippines were economically superior to South Korea for many years. (After WW2 and through the Korean War for obvious reasons) I am not sure if The Philippines have received as much foreign aid as South Korea has though. It would be interesting to do a comparitive study.

I spent about 2 weeks in the Philippines. I lived in what would be considered normal to slightly above normal filipino housing with no shower or air conditioning. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. Most people live in shanty towns in conditions well below Western standards. The funny thing is, filipinos are generally extremely sweet and giving people despite their circumstance. They're also educated for the most part and speak good english. The problems that I saw are government corruption and that the best and brightest are moving away to other countries for better opportunities. The Philippines isn't keeping the brain power in their own country.

Apprantly, way back in the 60's and 70's the Philippines was 2nd to Japan in terms of economic growth. Many Asians believed the Philippines was a good model for how to do things right. That is why so many Korean religious schools have ties with schools in the Philippines. Then came Ferdinand Marcos. He could have done what the dictators of SKorea, Taiwan, Hong Kong (British admins) and Singapore did during that time. But, corruption took its toll.

Interesting theory some Koreans have. Countries with cold winters tend to have higher standards of living. But, warmer countries are less developed.

I've known many of the immigrant filipino workers (From Dubai to Japan, Hong Kong, LA, and Honolulu),working menial jobs with long hours, who have been separated from their children for 5+ years. They working and live under these conditions JUST so they can make a buck, send it home, and pray that there is a chance to save enough money for lawyer fees to get their families out of an environment surrounded by poverty and corruption.

So please, don't talk about pinoys and pinays not having any work ethics.

Take a little time to study about the country's occupation first by Spain, then by America as a U.S territory and see what kind of state that left the Philippines in.

'Foreign aid' doesn't come for free. Just take a look at all the islands in Micornesia and melanesia that have been colonised by the west. Not to mention what is going on in the Middle East.

So I pose a question: Is autonomy a right? a privelege? or an illusion?
