Hey,
I'm looking to buy a gaming system, either a Wii, PS3 or XBOX 360. Will they be cheaper in korea, or should i get one in canada before i come? If i get one in canada will i be able to find an appropriate power adaptor so it will work? |

Gaming systems are region locked. So if you want to play US/Canada games then you'd better get your gaming system in Canada.
And you will have to buy a power transformer for it. They are like $30. You can find them just about everywhere in Korea. |

I think you are better off spending more money than you planned, and buy a new PC when you get here. Think of all the other uses you will get out of a PC compared to a console, and I think most console games can be played on PC. Could probably get a nice computer and monitor for about 1000 CDN. Other guys on this forum know better than me though. |

I don't think the OP is looking for a PC.
If you want, you could always get a mod chip for most systems you might buy. You may have problems if you wanted to use those systems online, though. I know that in Yongsan you can get the PS2, Xbox, 360, and Wii modded to play games from all regions. Modded consoles also play burned games, so you can download almost any game you want. |

If I were you, I'd buy an XBOX 360 here. You can get a great package deal from Yongsan Electronics Market or Technomart. If you get it at Yongsan you can ask the people who sell it to you to change the DVD so it will play DVD copies. They can also make DVD game copies for you. I know several guys there that will get copy games for you for 10,000 won a pop.
Also, buy a DVD Recorder for 35,000 won at Yongsan Station and burn your own 360 games from the Internet. I think that's the best option for getting the most for your money here. |

buy one here, get it modded, no need to get a "north american version" then, can play worldwide games |

I'm not positive as I haven't gotten around to getting my 360 chipped yet (anyone have any good directions on where to go for it? when i've asked at the guys in the underground area said they couldn't.), but I don't think the firmware hack makes the 360 region free. it lets you play copied games, but you still have to have games for your 360's region.
I've been thinking of getting a Wii at Yongson. Can anyone confirm that the modded Wiis are region free? |

oh.. yeah, I don't know about the 360, I got a PS2, it's region free.. I actually got mine in China where they are all modded before you buy them.. there's got to be someone at Yongsan who sells them this way and speaks passable English..
or at least someone who you can tell to mod it and then you'll buy it! |

just tried getting my 360's firmware changed there, found a guy that did it, but he wouldn't try it on a US 360, so no luck (if anyone has a korean one and would prefer a US one for whatever reason, we might be able to work out a trade, i also have a few legit games for it).
I did pick up a modded wii for 310k, could only find the japaneese version, so we'll see how I fare with the japanesse ui hehe. |

I'm not sure if the prices are the same in Canada, but if you are looking at a PS3, and you're not planning on living in Korea forever, get it at home.
There's not much difference, but if you want to play North American PS2 games (ie God of War 2) or watch DVDs on it, those two things are region-coded. Bluray apparently has the same region for Japan and NA, so that doesn't matter, and PS3 games are not region-coded.
Any "mart" (walmart, e-mart, etc) will sell that power converter. |

the place to get games and game related hardware seems to be in Yongsan as well. it is near Sunin Plaza (where you get all your comp related hardware). you have to cross the street from Sunin Plaza. it is located next to where all the cell phone stores are, in the basement.
bah, this is a lousy description but the best i can do right now. meh. |
