Our University sports director approached me about doing a private class 3 evenings a week. I do sports training almost every evening so I was preparing to refuse when he offered me 50,000 a class. Of course at that price I was willing to sacrifice some of my training time on the grounds that the director of the English department allowed me to do so (I was trying to be a good girl!). So the sports director talked with the English director and the two of them have decided that this is to be mandatory overtime at 18,000 an hour. Theyve taken all the control out of my hands, so I cant decide on the time and I cant cancel classes if I have something I want to do. I totally shot myself in the foot, eh! Now they are trying to make me do 3 classes a week (20 students/class) for 18,000\ and hour not 50 as was originally promised and this will continue next term as well. I want to cry. What can I do?

They must be giving the students a break on the price of the course if you're only getting 18,000 per hour. In case Korean labour law has changed mandatory OT is illegal. Just refuse to do it unless they pay you 50 per hour.

I've just told them 30,000/fifty minute class, 2 days a week, 6-7 (dinner time- just to piss them off) 1 month only.

That still doesn't prevent them from making it part of my regular class schedule next term as long as it's not overtime. They know I don't want to do eveing classes, so far my schedule has worked out fine that way, but next term they're going to screw me.

Anyway....why the hell should I have to compromise????

It all depends on what your contract says. Hours of work, overtime pay, etc.

I've fortunately never had to break out the contract, and I'd advise against if possible.

However, if they are trying to pull some b.s, you gotta do what you gotta do.

What does your contract say in regards to the time you are supposed to work?

Anyway forced overtime is illegal and why would you want to work at a place that treats you like that? Tell them that they will have a letter of resignation on their desk if they continue this nonsense. Because if you let them get away with this...it will just be the tip of the iceberg. They are testing you to see how much they can get away with.

OR

You could just show up to these classes, pop a DVD in and give them a worksheet based on the DVD to fill out. Normally I recommend doing a excellent job but if they are shafting you like this, then just do the mimimum.

These were supposed to be private classes, I'd say they are taking the students money paying the teacher jack all and pocketing the rest...don't do it. If you do, make sure the president knows about it and everyone at the billing office as well. In fact, post papers on all the campus message boards advertising it as well.

What a strange story.
If they decide to make it OFFICIAL overtime, then just say you don't want to do it anymore.

OP- Don't volunteer to help them. You tried to help them and look what happened. Evidently, no one is worth their word, so be wary of volunteering in the future.

Yeah that was what I thought too when I read your story. The two have gotten together to split the profits and cut you out!

Uh.. don't do it. They guy lied to you. They're keeping money for themselves.

"He said I would get 50, so I'm not doing it."

Don't let them use the excuse of OT by contract. That's BS. 20 students is a lot of money.

Exactly. Tell them that was not the original deal, so you are no longer giving up your free time. Go back to the original deal, and you'll think about it.

OP,

You could consider explaining to your boss that your not eligible to teach private classes since your on an E2 Visa. If says that's not true, then politely suggest that he call Korean Immigration to settle the dispute.

I agree with others here. Don't do it. They may actually try to entice you with more money. Don't do it. You have the upper hand. They need you in order for this to work. Don't do it.

Pretty easy solution, don't show up for the lesson.
