The digital world has finally caught up with the humble audio cassette as electrical retailer Currys announced it will stop stocking them.
Last year Currys sold just 100,000 tapes compared with 83 million in 1989.
The store will also phase out tape decks, which are currently available in less than 5% of audio equipment.
Currys said that the tape was no longer able to compete with MP3 players - some of which store the equivalent albums as 1,500 cassettes.
I used to do a hell of a lot of home-taping so I have lots of fond memories of cassettes.
I don't miss the chewing (which never really happened if you had a good tape deck and good tapes....TDK D-90 anyone?).
And I don't miss the hiss..........I never thought Dolby made much difference. Use Dolby and the hiss would be reduced but so would all the high-end of the music.
But I do still think it was a great, low-tech, affordable, everyman's kind of medium. Re-recording was a cinch unlike todays CD-RW's.
So, a toast to the humble cassette!
Thanks for saving me so much money and allowing me to share so much great music with my friends and vice versa. |
