|
|
I have searched most of the posts on here..was going to respond to one post but now I cannot find it-doh!
I went to the dentist and she said I need to have 6 fillings replaced (th post I was looking for had the OP with the same situation but when they went home to North America they said the KOrean dentist was wrong)! OUCH!
So she pointed to the gold sample and I said that silver was ok. She insisted on me having the gold...then we went to talk about prices and she said that it was going cost 1.6MILLION! Cough cough... they quoted:
10,000 won for each silver and 200,000-ish won for the gold..and then said the white ones (supposedly stronger than the silver) were exactly the same price as the gold (But in Canada the whites are only $30 more than the silver)..I will ahve to search again, but what is the general cost of one gold filling in Canada?
I asked why the amalgam (silver) was not ok, and they said they will break very quickly..but we use them in Canada all the time.
So my options:
1. Fork over the 1.6 million won here and go for the gold
2. Just get the amalgam/silver ones instead
3. Wait until I get back to Canada
Any thoughts? I am leaving in 2.5 weeks and need to sort this out ASAP..thanks |

I was told the same thing about the white vs. silver/amalgam. The problem is, according to the rest of the world (from all the research I did on the web, and specific questions to my dentist in Canada), the opposite is true (I think the white ones last about 7 years and the silver last about 12). Silver is covered by insurance (and so should cost only 3,000W, or 6,000 if it's a big one and they need two) and the other isn't, so they can charge whatever they want (I had two white ones done for 150,000W each). They seem quite convinced of this across the board, though, so I'm not ready to call it malicious on the dentists part, I'm guessing they were all misinformed in dentistry school, kind of like doctors who learn about fan death.
For what it's worth, my dentist here also 'volunteered' to replace all of my fillings, but I don't have any problems with them. Unless they explain to you specifically what the problem is with each filling then I'd tell them to go fly a kite. (a filling may come away from the tooth on one side and is letting in food, or something else like that. You might want to look into potential problems so you know if what they claim is possible.)
If you're leaving in 2.5 weeks, then I'd just get it looked at in Canada. Unless you are sure of it and decide to go for the silver (which are much cheaper here). |

Go to a different dentist. There are sooo many of them out there.
I had a filling replaced last week in my town. They let me choose between amalgam (7000won) and gold (200 000won). I chose the amalgam, which was what was in the previous filling and they charged me 6200won.
Didn't have to make an appointment - I was the only patient in there on Friday afternoon, and I was out of there in 20 minutes. |

I had a composite resin filling put in for 100,000 won. I hope I didn't pay too much... it's my first cavity so I don't know what is standard. The funny thing is, I need *three* more done at the same cost, which is a bit odd since at my check-up a year ago I had no problems and have actually cut out all acidic and sugary drinks since then! I wonder if I'm being screwed out of my precious won, especially since they only last a few years anways!
Sorry, no help here, I just want to rant. |

It's been like a year and 2 months since my last routine dental cleaning and I am so scared to go to a dentist here. Last time I put it off for 3 years and when I went back to the states my dentist there told me not to do it again. He said I had major plaque build-up and I had to have a root scaling done on one tooth. Still, I have NEVER ha a cavity. It's time to go for the cleaning again and I am ehsitating about making an appointment. Because...I once had a dentist here lie to me saying I had a cavity when i really didn't. I called him on his lying BS, saw my dentist in the states a few months later, and guess what? No cavity. I have to go soon though 'cause I don't want a major plaque buildup or root scaling again. |

id you just blindly believe some twit here in Korea? Maybe you didn't really have a cavity and just had a perfectly good tooth drilled and filled. I had a dentist ehre lie to me and I didn't let him touch my tooth. If you are late 20s/eraly 30s an never had a cavity, I don't believe you all of a sudden get one. |

Well, the dentist I saw was highly recommended to me by several foreigners which obviously doesn't mean that much but I believe I saw a good dentist. I went in with a toothache for the first time in my life and the one I had filled that day doesn't hurt anymore so I guess I did have a cavity. I'm seeing a different dentist soon to make sure I actually do have more cavities before I do anything else.
It wasn't actually drilled - he did that air abrasion thingy! |

Well, if you had a toothache, you must have really had a cavity then. That's how I was sure that dentist here was lying, because my teeth were not even bothering me. Watch out for that Dr. Choi dude in the Volovo building in Hannam. I saw him for the first and last time in 2000. No wonder I was the only one in his office that day. It was such a nice looking place, too. When I called him on his BS lie, he then asked me if I drank coffee. He said it could be just a stain. What dentist doesn't know the difference between a stain and a cavity??? I actually heard this dude was good, too. So, now I am majorly scared of dentists here. |

The nurses don't speak much English but he is fluent. I originally went to kim min hee....so expensive I was ready to just let my teeth fall out. Said I had many cavities and needed a root canal which I did. But that was covered by insurance. Any way she quoted about 1.9 million for 1 filling and the crown.
I tried the above dentist. Had him finish root canal put on porcelain/amalgam crown. Total for crown, dental work and 1 complete filling was 250,000. That was less than just the one crown in the fancy dentist clinic.
He will replace old filling for about 50 to 30K depending on how many you have. And replace with the tooth colored fillings. There is no floride in the water here so you need to take care of your teeth and make sure you buy tooth paste with floride.
His office is clean and he autoclaves all his equipment. But no fancy coffee machine or computers to play on while you wait.
Again while he speaks great english his nurses don't so try to call and talk to him or get a korean friend to call. I have sent alot of people there and he does great work at much more reasonable price!!!! Once you are there and you need more work he will make the appointments for you.
