Hey all,

I've been in Changwon for 4 months - I don't drink that much/don't go to the pub much and I've seen about 2 foreigners outside of the local pub.... does anyone know much about the social life outside of the pub in Changwon? I wanna make new connections coz most of my friends live in Busan or have left the country!

Also , anyone in Changwon do Taekwondo and wanna practice sometime?

Thanks

OP, I know what you mean. I am the only one I ever see, except at E-mart, Homeplus and that grey cobble stone street where 2 foreigner bars are located. There is little social life outside of the 2 foreigner bars such as IP's or O'briens. I do not go out much either (job makes me very exhausted often), other than for shopping and a foreigner bar on occassion for a good hot dinner, but do not go to bars for drinking. When I do go to the 2 foreigner bars, I do not meet many English teachers, but mostly engineer guys.

I find it is the best and most economical to just get online every night, watch movies downloaded through Utorrent, take weekend solo bus trips on occassion, and drink beer some nights at home. This is how you save 1 million won a month, albiet, a lonely lifestyle.

I don't drink or go to bars I go the gym all the time (Kickboxing).. Oh I live in Changwon as well I live in Dogye-Dong. I am a public school teacher. I am up for meeting with people on saturdays and or on sundays.

I also own a motorcycle which makes life a lot more interesting.. There are tonne of good roads outside of changwon for wicked day trips nice scenery as well. (As nice as it gets in Korea I guess) If you want to meet up PM me.

Great hiking in the north hills. Take a trip down to TongYong or Goje Island. Get some people together and play football or frisbee out on the big green at the rotary. Chiri Mountain is fairly close.

Etc.

I live in changwon and have been for a long time but i am one of those people that do frequent the foreigner bars here quite a lot.....I understand it is different horses for different courses but the value of networking and making firends in those places adds to living here a lot more than sitting at home doing nothing.

I can also see the day when my visits to these places will slow down as well but I always have too much of a good laugh with good people. Of course there is the odd fruitball but i just ignore them.

To be honest there isn't much of a foreigner scene outside of them however if you go to busan the story is a little different.

If i feel like a bit of a slow weekend I love the little trips to little towns in the countryside, or walks in the hills behind Changwon for a change of pace.

I'm just a little disappointed that there seems to be little in the way of organised community sport. I know that a number of the foreigners here get into playing soccer against other teams of koreans and foreigners, but I'd kill for organised basketball that I could either play or referee.

It's also a little difficult, as a number of the foreigners here are long termers, while I'm a young rookie (who really isn't too comfortable in social situations)

Oh well...

I just arrived in Changwon this past Thursday evening, so I'll be keen to explore those watering holes and see if there are any other activities a group of us could get up to of an evening/weekend...

What would you say to a taxi driver to get to "O'Brien's"? Is there a main hotel opposite?

thanks fellow Changwonites/Changwonistas...

You should come out for poker night. Thursday night at 10pm at O'briens bar. 10,000 won buy in and you meet many of the local foreign teachers while you're there.

This is the O'Briens website. It also has directions for you. Just make sure you click the Changwon one as there is also one in Busan.

Yeah, I live opposite the Obrians bar - its prob best to just say 'Inter-national hotel ju seyo' and if the taxi driver is looking bewildered add 'Ju-ang-dong Bu tak Hamnida' and he'll love you (probably because of the soju)

i don't want to take the piss out of your Korean as i know you are pretty new but both of these expressions are wrong and don't make much sense to a normal korean....

Juseyo means to please give me.
Putak hamnida means to do me a favor.

While i am sure the taxi driver gets the jist of what you are saying he probably is having a chuckle to himself.....

......ka juseyo or kaseyo - please go to ...... is what you are looking for.

Both of these expressions were told to me by my Taekwondo Kwangjannim.... He's korean and has been for about 45 years... Im just copying him...
