Any Americans got any opinions on this one.
I read a few editiorials online that were basically saying 'We fought this very same Monarchy once to ensure our freedom and democracy and why are we now spending so many US dollars and making such a fanfare over this latest Royal visit...?'
Also I myself feel very insulted by Pres Bush's joke about 1776 (the year the Brits were defeated, in case you didn't notice) and 1976...
It's not that I care about the result of the war of independance etc, but rather that Bush feels it's okay to publically insult / tease another countries representative in such a way. So very patronising....
Any thoughts? |

One, how do you know George Bush was joking? Aren't you taking this way too seriously. It was just a regular Bushism, a slip of the tongue, nothing people aren't used to by now.
The British were defeated in 1776? That is not true at all. You mean the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferon in 1776, and it was accepted. The war did not official end until 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. Too many in America think America achieved its independence in 1776. The Bicentennial wasn't really 200 years of American independence. 1983 would have been 200 years of independence.
Anyway, Queen Elizabeth had a joke on George Bush's expense.
Queen concludes visit with toast, joke By DESMOND BUTLER, Associated Press Writer
Wed May 9, 8:08 AM ET
WASHINGTON - The queen had the last laugh. Dispensing with protocol briefly at the formal dinner she hosted for President Bush, Queen Elizabeth said, "I wonder whether I should start this toast by saying, 'When I was here in 1776.' "
The joke was at the expense of the president the same president whose wife said he had to be talked into putting on the most formal dinner a White House can host a white-tie affair.
Bush took it in stride, though, starting his toast by saying, "Your Majesty, I can't top that one."
[Hey, it could have been worse. Bush could have gone into the restroom with a microphone while taking a whiz and singing very loudly while the queen could hear that (Do you remember the movie Naked Gun?).] |

It was not a slip of the toungue, it was a joke.
And even if she got her own back, it was still a pompous, arrogant, patronising thing to show her up in front of the eyes of the world like that.
Face it. |

How do you know if Bush was being arrogant. Bush has had so many slips of the tongue. I doubt he meant to disrespect the Queen. How many times has Bush goofed in public. Why can't this have been a goof?
Bush, anyway, in a jovial manner admitted that he messed up and said her majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave him a look only a mother could give when her child messes up. Is that being arrogant? I respect the monarch, and I am sure you do. |
