Ok, just in case this has yet to be posted....

So, it seems that more got nabbed for teaching illegally (with 1/2 being Chinese teaching Chinese). Some of those (teaching English) weren't even native English speakers nor were they high school graduates. The remainder (I've calculated what the reporter said, but come up with a different number...) were students in Korea teaching illegally. I'm not sure if the students teaching English is 46 or the total is 46 <wager the latter>.

Hakwon bosses (46 English directors and 10 Chinese Hakwon bosses) were only reprimanded.

Just for those who want to know, the breakdown of arrests is as follows:

Canadians: 10
Non-English: 8
Americans: 7
Kiwi: 4
Chinese (for Chinese Ed): 17

From reading and translating the article (barely translatable because of the legal jargon in it), it looks like they were solicited by a broker who took a large cut from their pay (though I am not sure just how much or if that info is correct or not)

I think the biggest hint that these guys were illegal was the fact that a good percentage of them were from "the other nationality" catagory. These days, alot of ETs/FTs are shying away from preschools to the point that they are hiring non-native speaking ETs to fill these slots. Not because they can speak English, but because they are there...

Good to see that the Hagwon owners were severely punished. Oh wait, the cheques went through? Business as usual.

Korea better be careful. If they start ripping off Chinese people, Older Brother might get angry. Wink

I know math has never been my strong point so I could be wrong but isn't the title of this thread wrong?

If the title claims 46 people were caught for illegaly teaching English BUT 17 of them were Chinese teaching Chinese why would someone claim 46 illegal English teachers were caught? And who would the "plus others" be if the 17 Chinese teachers are lumped in as part of the 46 ENGLISH teachers?

The graphic at the Daum web site is really amusing

Moreso for the teachers being in these tiny, sweaty boxes with graffiti on the walls. To quote Homer Simpson, "It's funny because it's true"

Flint, while a valid point, No Math teachers were arrested, so need not worry. Foreigners? English teachers? Monkeys? what's the difference?

but seriously, I don't understand the uproar over this. Other than the employers were not punished.

It's the same in america. deport the worker. give a stern warning to the employer.

Seems to be 46 foreigners total, with a breakdown of their nationalities but not the languages taught. The 56 hagwon directors were charged with the hiring of the foriegners but not detained (어학원 대표 56명을 불구속 입건했다고). I think that's more than a reprimand, but I don't know.

Those English teachers are lucky to get off so easy.

When me and my friend were busted for teaching illegally, the Koreans ate him (he was a yellow lab retriever) but I was spared the fate of the plate/bowel because I'm a black dog.

Very Happy

I'm sure you added that after I wrote that.

Or maybe my eyes were blurry this morning.

Or the Kiwi section may not have kicked in this month to the union.
