So far as I know I'm not part of EPIK - I was hired directly by my school district after being interviewed at my present school two years ago. Today I saw a newsletter that was 90% Hanguel but also contained a one-page letter for the 'Native English Assistant Teachers'. Now that's a great way to start off ... I teach about 1/2 my classes solo and for the others use a KET as my assistant teacher.

At any rate it provides a contact number in case I have a problem I can't resolve with my school or POE. I've never heard of any POE I work under, as I work within a county (군) school district. Then they get into the heart of the matter: their recruiting plan. 'We hope you will assist in introducing our recruiting plan for March 2008 to your acquaintances' it reads.

Yeah, I'm going to introduce it to my aquaintances in Korea by telling them to avoid EPIK and get hired directly by a school, not through them. Besides, what experienced teacher wants a job as an 'English assistant teacher'? (to say nothing of not being able to choose one's workplace). And who the hell wants to work under their style of red tape?

I can only hope that EPIK isn't actually in the process of getting their grubby hands on my job or I'll probably be off to a uni asap.

I could be very wrong on this but I think you might have been grandfathered in.. when EPIK took over all the districts. It falls somwehere with the Provincial board of education.. The school might have hired you but they are getting your money from them and they get that from the government.

Again I could be wrong...

I still have to repeat that to myself sometimes to remember.

On to the topic, yeah i got the EPIK newsletter last month in my email, even though i was hired by my school. My contract looks nothing (thank god) like EPIK either. My funding comes from a local nuclear plant. It sounds like the same BS email you got though. EPIK is great. Get your friends involved. blahblahblah

I saw that, "sell your friends and after you land them in the ROK we'll give you 100k per soul, letter one month ago.

How much does Epik as a recruiter get for each sucker?

I wonder how the racket works if a school directly hires or are they being screwed too into using their budget funding. Does Epik automatically applies for the recruitment subsidy?

I like my EPIK job. EPIK is simply a way for the schools to get money.
Your treatment depends on the individual schools not the EPIK program.
I'm hoping the new changes in EPIK will bring the not so good schools
in line with the better schools.

And if the guy pulls a runner, you probably have to return the money as well. Not worth all the headaches..not for 100,000 won.

100,000 won is a joke. It's definitely not worth the headaches.

OP: I was not hired as part of EPIK, but I received that newsletter a month or so ago.
