ATLANTA - A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple were found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

But prosecutors said the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as the babys body wasted away.

No matter how many times they want to say, Were vegans, were vegetarians, thats not the issue in this case, said prosecutor Chuck Boring. The child died because he was not fed. Period.

Although the life sentences were automatic, Sanders and Thomas begged for leniency before sentencing. Sanders urged the judge to look past his perception of the couple.

I loved my son and I did not starve him, she said.

When the judge told the defendants they could ask for a new trial, Thomas hung his head low.

Im dying every day in there, he said, and that could take three years.

VEgan or not, you have to be A RETARD to substitute BREAST MILK (one of the healthiest foods on the planet) for effing soy milk and apple juice.
I'd like to reiterate an important point:

I have several vegan friends who, like normal humanoids breastfed their baby for the appropriate time frame (with the exception of one couple who chose to use formula b/c of extreme discomfort). Their children (now 3-6 years old) are all perfectly healthy, balanced normal people.

Again, the problem isn't that htey're vegan, the problem is that their idiots!

Does prison offer a vegan menu?
And if someone spits in it, is it still vegan?

These people need to be slapped with raw steaks until they're dead. Or frozen steaks. Doesn't matter.

Edit: My friend came here for a month. I hadn't seen him for a few years. He is hardcore vegan now, and was completely insufferable to live with. Everyday life had to revolve around his extremely rigid dietary requirements. Shopping for him was a fucking nightmare.

I can smell the smugness of that horrible couple all the way from here...or maybe it's pechuli.

I'm glad these morons got what they deserved. Poor child- to suffer for no reason other than a very stupid unnatural stance on food his parents had.

Typical of vegans. Not only do they feel the need to force their messed up agenda on other adults they now force it on newborns. Evil people, the lot of them.

To the extent that vegans make propaganda against drinking cows milk (aside from focusing on dairy industry abuses) they're in ignorance...

By nature's arrangement, cows milk is intended to nourish humans - especially kids - and the cow has always been considered like a mother in Vedic culture.

Meateaters who gloat over something like this are even more ignorant...

(And those who butcher the spelling of patchouli may not be as bright as they think they are, either ...)

I know a vegan couple who've been raising a healthy baby girl for about a year now.. many do it every year as well. The issue here is obviously that these so-called parents were criminally incapable of raising a kid, not that they were vegans.

Vegans are people who don't eat anything that comes from an animal; be it meat or byproduct

I think what you're saying is kind of unfair. I know a person close to me who isn't quite vegan. The person will consume dairy products, but not meat. I also know another who will do the same. She is kind of forcing herself to eat certain meats, because it is hard to be a vegetarian in Korea. As long as the person doesn't freak out about you being a meat eater, it is no big deal. I prefer my steak, but I would put up with a friend who wasn't as long as I wasn't begrudged of my steak.

This couple didn't use common sense. The child should have been breastfed. There is nothing more natural for a baby to have than being breastfed. They didn't consult a doctor. It's man slaughter due to negligence and idiocy. Anyway, a baby should bond with the mother while being breast-fed.

I realize that there are many responsible vegans out there. However, when it comes to issues of health or even moral high ground, I remain unconvinced.

If there are still many vegans who like to preach to meat eaters, then they must realize that every vegan is an ambassador for their cause. That is the price to pay for stepping up to the pulpit.

Hopefully the prison will offer them nothing to eat except rare beef and warm milk. If they die in jail (in an very painful fashion at the hand of other inmates, preferably) they'll be doing the human genepool a favor.
