It appears that 24 unarmed civilians (including women and children) have been murdered by US marines. This was then covered up.

According to Eman, the marines then entered the living room. "I couldn't see their faces very well - only their guns sticking into the doorway. I watched them shoot my grandfather, first in the chest and then in the head. Then they killed my granny."

She claims the troops started firing toward the corner of the room where she and her younger brother, Abdul Rahman, 8, were hiding; the other adults shielded the children from the bullets but died in the process. Eman says her leg was hit by a piece of metal and Abdul Rahman was shot near his shoulder.

"We were lying there, bleeding, and it hurt so much. Afterward, some Iraqi soldiers came. They carried us in their arms. I was crying, shouting, 'Why did you do this to our family?' And one Iraqi soldier tells me, 'We didn't do it. The Americans did.'"

Fresh evidence of 'executions' by rogue US marines in Iraq

New photographs lend weight to allegations of revenge killings by US unit under attack in which 24 unarmed civilians died

Fresh photographic evidence seen by US investigators is believed to reveal that some of the 24 unarmed Iraqis killed in the Iraqi town of Haditha after an American died in a roadside bomb in November were in effect executed, it was reported yesterday.
According to Congressional and defence officials quoted by the Los Angeles Times, the pictures show wounds to the upper bodies of the victims, who included several women and six children. Some were shot in the head and some in the back.

'There wasn't a gunfight, there were no pockmarked walls,' the paper reports a congressional aide as saying. And it quotes a US Defence Department official who had been briefed on the contents of the photos as saying 'the wounds indicated execution-style' shootings.

Quote:
Eyewitnesses and human rights groups believe the marines swept through the town in a lust for revenge. The attack may have lasted for several hours. At the end of it, 24 Iraqi civilians had been killed. They included a 76-year-old amputee and a four-year-old boy. In one house an entire family, including seven children, were attacked with guns and grenades. Only a 13-year-old girl survived.

Indeed ...

And while Big Bird at least doesn't appear to be one, a few of us here still recall you quickly jumping on this one as soon as it broke in the mainsteam press, a while back now.

My point for simply saying 'Haditha' is that from now one it'll be one of those words in our lexicon that require no explanation, like 'Pearl Harbour', or '9/11', or 'My Lai' or 'Abu Ghraib'.

I'm watching John Murtha with George Stephanopolous on ABC This Week and he says there is absolutely no doubt there was a massacre of 24 civilians and there is photographic evidence. There is also a huge cover up and "the real question is how far up does this cover up go"?

I'm glad to hear that(about the show, not the massacre).

But do you get the impression that this story is otherwise being downplayed? It doesn't seem to have too huge a prominence on the American news sites I was just checking out. But I haven't seen the print or TV media for the last few days, so I dunno.

I, too, commend Bulsajo for being on top of this right away.

Maybe the transcript of ABC Thei Week with GS will be online later; I hope so because I think they mention this at one point.

Iraq is merely one story among many in the U.S. news this week, whose coverage ranges from immigration (which currently dominates the news) to the conflict between the executive and Congress and also American Idol.

In any case, the story is not being downplayed or "covered up."

This was published last Friday, for example...

No, it is a big deal.

For those constantly mining the net for data to support their argument that the U.S. is the Great Satan, this story confirms their beliefs. Indeed, it gives them ammunition.

For others, this is very unfortunate and a tragedy.

So, either way, yes, it is a big deal.

he was being sarcastic there. Wink

The key, is that it isn't being down played or "covered up" NOW...because the story was broken...the members of the marine unit and their superiors definitely "tried" to cover it up and down play it, but evidence came out because they could not cover their tracks....

But, since it has come out, because it made it so far up the chain of command, the US military had to begin a formal investigation...now they can be brought up on charges (some for murder - which carries a possible penalty of death...)...

You are right though, it is a very unfortunate incident....
