Here's the dilemma. Friends of mine may be going to Jeju for the pitiful summer vacation our hogwan provides. They want me to go as well. I have mixed feelings. The way I see it, it will still be Korea, with Koreans pointing, staring, being rude and providing bad service. I would come away less refreshed than when I left. When I think vacation, I immediatly think relaxing, getting away from it all, friendly people and places, interesting new food. I just can't see Jeju doing that for me. I don't care if it's Korea's answer to Hawaii. It's still Korea and all that entails. Why go to Jeju when I can go to the Phillipines or Thailand and just blend in with tourists, and with people who are used to tourists. Don't tell me Jeju is used to tourists as well. They are used to Korean tourists.
Can someone convince me otherwise? I'd like to hear your Jeju vacation stories, good and bad.
Thanks

I went to Jeju for my vacation last year and regretted it so bad. I wish I had gone to Thailand instead. Jeju was nice, but it was no big deal at all. The beaches were packed, ppl bothered you to buy food and beer. Not the greatest vaca!

Yeah, lived in Jeju for a year... its basically the same as the rest of Korea.. .but during summer break, there's some good beaches if you know where to go (go to Jungmun beach on a weekday and its quite cool).

Depends on your money situation. You could do a jeju vacation from Seoul for like 300,000 won. I guess a trip to the fils is like... 1 million+? but, if you're just in asia for a year, dont waste your time on Jeju. Go see some other asian country.

There are dozens of casinos in Jeju. More than you can shake a stick at. I live two blocks from one and make a nice secondary income gambling. ...One of the best things about living here. That said, I don't recommend vacationing here (it's just not all that) unless you're compelled to do so on the cheap. Come down for a long weekend at best.

Take this as you may, but there's a universal truth about all places that rely on tourist dollars for a good chunk of their economy:

Great place to visit. Crap place to live.

Jeju is a great place to live and visit. I lived there for over 2 years, and have been back with several friends for vacations. You just have to know where to go and what to see. Don't eat at the tourist attractions, find someone who lives there to tell you where to go.

If you want some ideas, let me know, I could give you several.

Horrible Idea get out of the country!
Beaches would be nice except there to packed with screaming kids and ajumma in inner tubes....plus don't forget the police in the boat blowing the whistle at you if you swim deeper then past your shoulders.....ah what a relaxing life...I was more stressed out coming from Jeju-dump then when I was when I left....jeju island is nice on a long weekend when hopefully half the country is not there.

Jeju should be visited while you have a 3 day weekend, or during Chusok (book your tickets way early for that, btw). Get out of the country for your longer vacation!
