Just checking some of the ads for jobs back home in england, and there are quite a few DOS positions for those with experience and qualifications (i have 4 years and am halfway through my MA TESOL).

Just wondered what a DOS actually does? Any DOS's out there? What are your duties?

I Korea, the DOS is generally responsible for delivering bad news to all the foreign teachers. They make a little bit more money, but get loaded down with a bunch of crap the Korean managers don't want to do.

Pass on news from above.
Organise the timetables.
Order books.
Sort out exam registrations
Maybe a bit of curriculum planning.

Things like that.

Wow. I had no idea anyone in Korea actually handled any of those duties. I thought it was pretty much an "ESP" thing- they assume you can read their minds so they never tell you anything. Rolling Eyes

Even if I could read their minds all I'd usually read is blank pages. Rolling Eyes

i dont think i would be a DOS in Korea, i was just looking at the job ads for back home in england. seems to be a fair number of DOS positions advertised on tefl.com in the UK. seems like the moneys not too bad and i seem to be qualified, just wondered what i would be in for if i took one of those positions.

I don't think the pay is that good for DOS positions in the UK is it? Plus you have to put up with all the other teachers complaints.

I remember the DOS at the langauge school I worked in in London. Nice enough girl, but she didn't have an air of authority about her so she wasn't taken that seriously.

I was DOS once. I just sat in my office and looked very very important. In my spare time, I picked my nose and ass and rubbed it on staff members and teachers.

On a few occasions, I had to let go of a few people including myself. Embarassed
