Hey you all, any input would be appreciated. So I'm about to take a job in Bundang, I've negotiated the contract, talked with a foreign teacher, talked with the director, done almost everything except get on the plane to go but I'm still unsure that Bundang is the right place for me. I know that the school is centrally located in a hood near the subway station and Lotte Mart. But a few things worry me. I don't like American suburbs at all. I love being able to walk wherever I need to go, be it bar, market, or dokpoki and udang street stalls. I want to get my Korean on in the Nori-bangs and barbeque joints if the mood strikes me. I don't want to see Westernized bullshit everywhere I look although I know that in some ways it is everywhere. I just wonder if it is more prevalent in Bundang than somewhere else. So, if I move to Bundang, will it seem like just another American town?

While Bundang is a suburb of Seoul, it is also larger than most American cities in terms of population. It is a "new city" that I have watched grow from construction plots into a planned urban environment. It is not a quaint, foreign "asian" city if that is what you are looking for. It has all the ammenities of life in fairly close proximity. That and the subway system is pretty darned good so you can get what you are lacking (be it entertainment or whatever) without too much hassle.

Lotte Mart? Sounds like you'll be in Seohyeon. It has eveything you need, scaled down a little. There are some foreigner hangouts, shopping and grocery, fitness centers, theatres - anything you might really want and the buses to Seoul are RIGHT THERE if you find something lacking.

Personally, if this is what you like, Seohyeon is the place to be.

When you think suburb, don't think American suburb; think Korean population 2 million (rough guess) in a pretty small area suburb.

It's a lot lower than that: 450,000.

PS - Bundang!
