|

Hi
I want to upgrade my computers RAM myself.
1) How much should I pay for 1 GB of DDR RAM?
2) Are there any technical/compatibility issues I should be aware of? |

Hi. I'm not in a real good state to be posting..but its still as easy as ABC..
Since no one else has..
it depends on your system - have you a laptop or a desktop? Either way, you need to find out what type of RAM or motherboard you've got already. If its a laptop type RAM - search '[your laptops model] and RAM' to find out what type you've got and your max upgrade. Then just look for that kind. If its a desktop - do the same or if you know the type of motherboard, look for the RAM thats cool with your chipset.
Just make sure you've got equal amounts of RAM in both channels, else its a waste of time ... I.e. get 2x512 or 2x1GB |

Check out http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/
This tool should automatically select the kind of memory you need. I think they actually ship to Korea, as well. I just did this last week, and 2GB DDR2 is running swell in my laptop.
Even if you don't order from them, the tool will tell you the details of the RAM you need, and answer questions you may have.
**edit: FYI, on Dell.com, 2GB for my laptop was $317. At Crucial, it was $109. 512KBx2 for my parents' desktop just cost around $90, for a gauge.
My suggestion: if you can afford it, just get 2GB now, so you don't have to upgrade again later, and sometimes it's pretty cheap anyway. |

Thanks, I'll check Crucial out. I've already picked up a nice little program called Sandra that has sussed out my system specs.
I don't think I'll go to 2 gigs. My computer is almost 3 years old, meaning it will be a challenge to get anything new to run. I just want to be able to play Civilization 3 and MP3s at the same time. |

I checked my work com (it has one stick of 512 DDR PC3200)and pulled out another stick of 512 DDR PC3200 upstairs where they've thrown out a bunch of Com's. It's identical to what I'm currently running. It also says I have 3 available slots. What do I do, just throw it in the next door slot and I'm set or is it more complicated to upgrade to 1gig? |

Often, depending on the mobo, the click-tabs that lock the RAM into the slot will be color-coded... put the 2x512 sticks into the same colored slots. If the tabs are not color coded, no big deal, you may just end up running at 2T as opposed to 1T timings (not really a big difference unless you are looking for serious performance). RAM is certainly plug n play, no configuration or anything complicated required. |
