2 months ago, my coworker was busted for having a fake degree. Instead of getting on the first fliight out of here, he waited 2 days before trying to board a plane to Thailand. I was informed recently that he actually got arrested at the airport. This guy had no money and I doubt knew anybody who could send him money. What would have happened to him?! I lent this guy $100 and he never paid me back!

Sucks to be your friend. Keep us updated with what happens, but I don't think it will be too bad. It's not in Koreans interest to keep him here for too long, unless they want to make an example of him. (Unlikely.)

As for repaying your $100 , I'm sure that's not on list of top priority things to do. Write it off as a donation towards his legal fees.

He was a snake and he got caught. He probably spent that 100,000 won in a bar. Rolling Eyes Just be glad you didn't loan him more money.

Where did he get the degree from and what was the quality level like on it?

Do they check the degrees further down the line to see if they are dodgy or do they carry out random tests?

Who knows how he got caught? Could be an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend Rolling Eyes , the boss got sick of seeing his face, or maybe the one who sold him the fake diploma ratted on him. Maybe he got drunk in Itaewon and told everyone at the bar that he was teaching with a fake diploma. The possibilities are endless.

Yeah, Thailand already has an overabundance of that.

Immigration officer: Let's see your degree Mrs.Squirrel...Hmm...squirrel is spelled wrong and the degree is from "Hivard" not Harvard. Everything checks out just fine.....wait, the thickness of the paper is 0.005 mm wider than a usual Hivard degree....it's fake.

--My degree is real and I hope they catch all of the fake ones...but the people working there are so useless they couldn't find their friend's ass with both hands and a GPS.

Yeah, let's forget about guys like George Bush and Al Zahawri, the real criminal is an English speaker who comes to th Republic of Korruption with a phoney degree. What a slimeball, thinking he could possibly do what we do in a Hawkwon. After all, think how much training we got in college for the kind of work we do, the preparation for such a professional work enviroment....

Unlike some of you, I am proud of the fact that I have a college degree.

Unlike some of you who fake it, I spent long four years of hard work and partying to earn it. And I actually felt I've learnt something as well. Rolling Eyes

Indeed ChuckE...Four years at university was the most dangerous, exhilarating and physically demanding time in my life thus far. The roll of the paper was a sweet sweet reward for making it through..alive

Arrested twice, charged zero, numerous near death experiences, brushes with wild animals and wild characters, some cramming, some lectures between Kermit the Bong and animal planet, a bloodstream resembling a mad scientist's chem lab, and all the while being able to play the 'don't worry, I'm a student' card to get out of almost every bad situation.

Saddest part about those who get fake degrees is the massive event they missed on while they were too busy sucking at life.

Unles George Bush and Al Zahawri are English teachers here, they have no relevance to the discussion. This is the Job-related forum, not Current Events.

And yes, anybody who comes here with a fake degree is a slimeball and loser. It is because of rejects like those, that those of us who ARE legal have to jump through an ever-increasing number of hoops and regulations. Transcripts, letters of confirmation, hassles at Immigration...

My personal recommendation would be for Korea to really crack down on illegal teachers.

If caught teaching with an illegal degree the penalty should be a year's imprisonment...same duration as a E-2 visa lasts.

That would pretty much eliminate the problem and drive up wages/living conditions for those of us who are left.
